I would like to replace the existing Linux Lite with a new installation on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I need to replace the existing Broadcom driver because of intermittent WiFi connection and have been experiencing problems With the Synaptic Package Manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A word about the offering of the 3.8 kernel.

As this is the last build in the 1.0 LTS series, we wanted to offer people more hardware support. The 3.2 kernel is fairly old now, and Linux Lite 2.0 is bound to be sporting a very up to date kernel come release time circa May/June 2014. At the moment the only downside we have in offering the 3.8 kernel in this release is that if you install the proprietary video drivers you may lose the grey penguin start up and shutdown screen. There isn't much we can do about this at the moment, the up side is that start up and shutdown will be that much quicker as a result. If the grey penguin start up and shutdown screen is important to you, stick with the open source video drivers. You can also always just stay with 1.0.6 if it is meeting your current needs.

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware: Login is automatic, no credentials required.
The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable CD or DVD.
Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-1.0.8-32bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick.
In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar.
Please see the built in Help & Support manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

There is no upgrade process from one Linux Lite version to the next because of all the in-between modifications. If 1.0.6 is working well for you stick to that, otherwise you will have to clean install 1.0.8. There is also no way to upgrade from the 1.0.8 betas. In future builds of Linux Lite we will provide a simple upgrade path during LTS releases.

Recommended Hardware/Minimal System requirements:

700 MHz processor+
512 MiB RAM+
5 GB of hard-drive space+
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution
Either a CD drive or a USB port for the iso

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Install Updates.

Linux Lite 1.0.6 64-Bit Final Released
Posted by: Valtam - 02-12-2014, 07:15 AM - Forum: Release Announcements - No Replies

Release Announcement

Hot on the heels of our 1.0.6 32bit pae release, due to popular demand we are releasing our first ever 64bit version of Linux Lite. Enjoy all the features of our 32bit pae version, now in 64bit. In an effort to keep the final iso size to a minimum we have provided a one click Steam installer due to the ia32-libs and additional dependencies that Steam requires on a 64bit operating system. Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas, code and their support. There is no update process from the beta version.

If you haven't already, please consider 'liking' our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Linuxlite...3192787066 and help spread the word to people who may not have heard of linux operating systems before.

Live USB/DVD/VirtualBox/Vmware: Login is automatic, no credentials required.
The image can be written to a 2gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD.
Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-1.0.6-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick.
In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar.
Please see the built in Help & Support manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.

Recommended Hardware/Minimal System requirements:

A 64bit capable cpu processor.
512 MiB RAM+
5 GB of hard-drive space+
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution
Either a DVD drive or a USB port for the iso

Login to the live desktop is automatic.

Using this architecture also means 64bit will idle with more ram than the 32bit version (around 220mb for 64bit vs 140mb for the 32bit version from a cold boot). This is why for so long I have been such a staunch advocate of 32bit pae operating systems, but I am nonetheless happy to provide a 64bit version for those who require one. The end user benefits from the overall performance of a 64bit operating system.

In 1.0.8 the pae kernel will be dropped, but will still be available via an install script for those that want it. This is good news for those with older hardware and allows us to cover the maximun possible spectrum of personal computers within the 3.2 kernel.

Features/Fixes:

Exact same features as our 32bit pae version.
Kernel 3.2.0.48
Updated Help Manual.
2 new install scripts, Install ia32-libs and Install Steam.
Steam installer now in Install Additional Software (to save on iso size)
Custom installation slides should now work in all languages.
Fixed Firefox opening files dialogue.
All custom scripts now also work via the Desktop right click (thanks to rattatoue and SoulSpire)

How do I upgrade from 1.0.0?

To be perfectly honest, if you are happy with 1.0.0 and it does everything that you need it to, there is no need to upgrade. Unless there are features in the changelog above that you need. There is no actual 'upgrade' procedure. If you want to use 1.0.2, you will have to do a fresh install.

This distro was created for 3 reasons. One, to show people just how easy it can be to use a Linux based operating system - to dispel myths about how scary Linux operating systems are, two, to help create awareness about Linux based operating systems, and three to help promote this community.

Linux Lite is free for everyone to use and share, and suitable for people who are new to Linux or for people who want a lightweight environment that is also fully functional.

You get a web browser, email, a music & movie player, cd/dvd burner, office software, voice chat, photo editor, network access tools, printing & the Linux Lite Help Manual. All the tools you need out of the box to get you up and running straight away and using Linux Lite productively as soon as you've installed it.

Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with 5 years support. The following software is included: GParted, LibreOffice Writer, LibreOffice Calc, XFBurn CD/DVD Burner, VLC Media Player, Firefox Web Browser with Flash, OpenJDK Java v6, Mumble Voice Chat, Thunderbird Email, XChat IRC Client, Gimp Image Editor, Leafpad Text Editor, Xarchiver.

Get you Linux Lite signature bar from here - http://www.linuxdistrocommunity.com/foru...d-368.html

Points to note:

  • If people join from Mumble, please tell them the push to talk key is F6 (already in the documentation) their joining name will be linuxlite.
  • Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, if you have knowledge on Ubuntu, we would love for you to participate in the support process.
  • There is no 64bit version at the moment however, this may change in the future.
  • Many popular programs can be installed with one click by going to, Menu, System, Install Additional Software.
  • System updates are a one click deal by going to, Menu, Install Updates.
  • People coming from Windows may not know how to install drivers after a new install of Linux Lite. Many issues can be resolved by performing this simple operation. Menu, Settings, Install Drivers.
  • We'll be starting a Wiki for Linux Lite soon, if you'd like to help and contribute information to the Wiki, we are looking for volunteers now (please send Valtam an email through these Forums).
  • Linux Lite versioning - as there are plans for future point releases, Linux Lite will follow the 1.0.0 format. 1 representing the Ubuntu base (12.04.1) the second 0 representing a major change eg. updating to XFCE 4.10, and the 3rd 0 representing bug fix point releases.
  • Linux Lite codenamed after precious Gems - The first release is codenamed Amethyst. Each major release (see above) will be named after a precious gem in alphabetical order, the first being Amethyst. The next major release will be codenamed Beryl.
  • Help with Linux Lite - if you'd like to contribute your expertise to the project, for now we are only looking for Documentation writers (MediaWiki). Ideally, you will have prior or current experience in writing manuals, step-by-step documentation.
  • The desktop environment for Linux Lite is XFCE 4.8. If someone comes along and asks how they can install eg. E17 or Cinnamon or LXDE on or any other DE, this falls outside the scope of our support. Support from us for the DE is for XFCE only.

On the release day of Windows 8, this is a huge opportunity for us to show off a Linux based operating system. Lets show people that their operating system can be free and secure and still be easy to use. Enjoy freedom, share knowledge.

Thank you everyone Smile
