  Fan control
Posted by: siringo - 02-18-2014, 03:52 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

Hello.

My laptop seems to get quite hot during use and the fan doesn't seem to kick in as it used to when I ran Windows.

I've googled the problem and it seems quite a common problem with Linux. I'm hoping some one here can help me out.

I have an HP DV6 Pavilion. The fan is OK as if I shut down Linux, reboot, and break into the BIOS, the fan starts up as it used to in Windows and attempts to cool things down.

Thanks for any help.

ATI driver 'disappeared' after last system update
Posted by: GatesHater52 - 02-18-2014, 02:51 AM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (12)

After installing the last round of updates, I lost my extended desktop, and when I try to open Catylist, I get a message that no supported card is installed. "Install drivers'" comes up with a blank window, while my Radion HD4200 intigrated graphic chip shows if I run sudo lshw -C display in a terminal window. It is not listed under system information. HELP!

  Hello All!
Posted by: Mr Plod - 02-17-2014, 12:08 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (4)

I looked at Linux 10 years ago and it just wasn't ready for me then :Smile  Because I couldn't get everything to work right without a struggle it was easier to stick with Windows...

Having become increasingly fed up with my Lappy running hot, slow & crashing I decided that because my machine was only 3 years old I would have a look at something more resource friendly.

Having got on well with some other Open Source software - OpenOffice, Firefox & Thunderbird to name a few - I decided to revisit Linux and I discovered Linux Lite. At first it appeared to work right out of the box. But, I never got the WiFi to work properly and no one on here could help me with it, so I've ended up with Ubunto 14.04 instead and it is absolutely brilliant.
My initial plan was to Dual Boot. But, I soon got rid of my Windows install and 6 months down the line I now know that I will never use another MS product again.

Although I couldn't stay with Linux Lite, part of the experience of trying it made me more determined to stick with Linux.

THANKS GUYS!

  Customising/changing the boot splash screen
Posted by: crunch182 - 02-17-2014, 11:24 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (6)

So I'm well into changing features on my OS, and was wondering about the boot splash screen?

Now I know there's a panel that you can change the splash screen and I have done so but it doesn't seem to be the part I want to change.  I figure the definition of a boot splash screen is the one that is viewed when the OS is booting up, however, I get the plain looking grey one with the loading bar - that is really dull in my opinion - and then the boot splash screen I chose loads up just before my desktop wallpaper appears.

I'm fine with the plain command-line interface of Grub (where I choose OS to boot up right), it's just the ugly grey one that appears before this I would like to change?

Answers would be appreciated thanks.  Also, my screen resolution is 1024 by 768 on XP and would like the same on Linux but I'm not given the option (it's only an ever so slight cut off at the top of my screen) not bothered so much, so I don't think I'll create a new topic.  However, shouldn't I be able to change it, it seems only to allow 1024x576.

  XFCE Weather Applet fix
Posted by: Valtam - 02-17-2014, 05:54 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (7)

The XFCE Weather Applet no longer updates and as a result it is no longer able to fetch data.
Here is the fix:

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dtl131/mediahacks
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xfce4-weather-plugin
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:dtl131/mediahacks

Windows XP is going out of support in April 8th, 2014.

In a couple months, Windows XP is going out of support. Since this is a Linux forum, we would recommend you go to Linux Lite, as that has about the same requirements as Windows XP.

Thunderbird Pauses on Linux Lite 1.0.6
Posted by: kjacobs - 02-16-2014, 04:18 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

Hi folks,

I am not sure why this happens, but have noticed since switching computers and installing LL 1.0.6 on this system that software will occasionally hang for a while. This is mostly noticed when using Thunderbird....the program will simply pause for close to a minute and I am unable to click any messages, tabs, close, etc. I can usually open other programs with no problems or click on tabs for other programs already open. I simply have to wait and twiddle my thumbs until Thunderbird wakes back up and then can go on with emails.

This does not happen all the time and appear to be random, but happens enough to be a nuisance......any thought?

Ken

I am running 1.0.6 32-bit PAE and cannot for the life of me find a user manager. I found the directions on where it should be (click on Menu, Settings, User Manager) but see nothing there. Hoping someone might have some more info for me.

  Security
Posted by: Jackson2014 - 02-16-2014, 02:37 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

Hi, .. Being a complete newbie to Linux, from what I have been learning about the need or lack of it where security software is concerned, I have a question regarding the firewall. Is the firewall installed active in Linux Lite or does it have to be turned on as it does in Ubuntu? I have not been able to find the firewall in Lite.
Can anyone inform me about this? I have not been able to find an answer to this anywhere on line.
Help would be appreciated.

Hi folks, .. I'm glad to find this forum. I'm a complete newbie to Linux. I just installed Ubuntu for a friend of mine on their laptop to provide them with a needed OS and I became aware of Linux Lite just today and am strongly considering changing my friends OS to Lite to make it more user friendly for them.  I have an old backup PC that is running WinXP and I am strongly considering installing Linux Lite on that also.  .... I'll be around.
