This trick may help you.
i had a problem with a older Linux Lite version of Vlc in the past.
To get a version that worked for me i marked for removal Vlc via the install/remove software application.
Downloaded the latest windows full version and then loaded it via Wine as this application allowed me to load windows software.
After that i just set up associations so it new which programs to start.
if a newer version came along again i would with Wine un-install Vlc then re-install.
Best to back up you system first before attempting this
