Burned the ISO to an 8GB usb stick using Unetbootin (tried Rufus too and it also did the job, thanks).
Unfortunately, I can't get my computer to boot from usb. f2 gives no option for usb in the boot menu and f10 only shows the hard drive and the dvd. I'm Googling around to find a solution but no luck yet..

Jerry,
It's probably academic (since I think I may have one of the few computers on which LL cannot be installed) but I've just realised that I failed to answer your post. So :- 1. Burned ISOs for both LL2.4 and 2.6. Verified the MD5SUM and everything seems to be OK with the disks. 2. Tried to run each separate disk from the attached Medion DVD drive (the built-in drive on the HP Slimline Pavillion has been dead for months) and each attempt reached precisely the same stage before hanging - viz:- a). Disk booted to the live desktop (needed to adjust the resolution to see it fully) ; checked out some of the settings - e.g. wireless connection, mouse, keyboard, etc and all responding OK. b). Back to live desktop and double-clicked the application ico to run the installation. c). First item on the wizard was the welcome screen showing languages menu with English already highlighted; clicked "Continue" button. d). Next screen gave options to download updates, etc whilst installing. Did not check either option box and clicked "Continue" button. e). From that point, the small circular timer ball started spinning.....and...on...and on.... etc. I let it run each time for about an hour till it was obviously a no-go and then aborted. I don't know if any of the foregoing will be of use to anyone else but, there you have it. Many thanks to all for your efforts.

I just installed on an old Dell came with XP.. Dont fret it should install...
Check your bios, see if you can set order to boot to USB and make this the 1st option. Unless this isn't legacy and uses UEFI??? There maybe a few "other" things that may be needed..

There isn't a BIOS screen as such on this computer. The nearest I can get to it is by pressing f10 to go into " set up. " Under the "Boot" tab it itemises the various drives but no usb.

Try the HP website to see if there's an update for your BIOS.

Thanks all. Tried finding a BIOS update via the HP website. Apparently for my model, running W7, there are no BIOS updates available.
I'll have a go at the PLOP route and see what happens.

Latest update;
Burned a PLOP disc - no problem with that but on selecting USB option nothing happened - i.e. LL2.6 installation on usb stick not being recognised. Just can't figure it out. I even did a complete reinstall of W7 (excuse the profanity) this afternoon and still having no luck. One (perhaps final) thought occurs; I've been proceeding on the assumption that the issue is one of hardware. However, I've used the same dvd drive to reinstall W7 as well as other software, audio, video, etc and it functions perfectly. Likewise, I've tested all 5 usb points and they're all reading/writing as they should. Ergo, where's the hardware issue??? |
