Currently in the world of lite weight and flexibility DE. XFCE and LXQT (LXDE gtk2+) are equal memory usage and openbox light weight king.

But the point is that XFCE allows the most flexibility for the end user. As LXDE is in the middle of a change from one framework to another. Which make it a little heavy up front moving to QT.
But as stated before I do not think a move to LXQT or LXDE will ever happen.
