I found out what caused this "weird" behavior.
An old memory from way back and my earliest dabbling with LL came back, about very late version 2 and/or very early version 3. Back then I had some troubles with failing installations EVERY time I told the installer to download updates during the install. These problems with failing installations went away when I did NOT allow the installer to download updates.
So I gave it one more try telling the installer NOT to download updates but I allowed installation of the additional functionality.
And alas, the system works like it should, no GRUB screen.
And for the super precise ones: NO CHANGE to the computer and/or to the UEFI/Bios.
Now, if I only could figure out how to mark this thread as SOLVED...
