"Weird" behaviour after install LL 5.2 - eikelein - 12-11-2020

Frustrated.
I use Linux Lite since version 3.x for those of my older customers that do only web mail and surfing and for whom Windoze is too complex.
I downloaded version 5.2 and created an install USB drive with Balena Etcher!
I did not get asked but the system starts into a text interface of GRUB.
How can I eliminate GRUB?
The computer is an older HP with AMD A8 cpu, 12GB of RAM and a 240GB Crucial SSD; except for the SSD it is a plain vanilla HP machine with more RAM.
TIA
Eike

I think you asked about this back in November.

I don't think you can easily eliminate GRUB - it is the boot loader and it launches an OS kernel after the system has booted from its firmware.  Because there are many combinations of firmware and OS, GRUB has to be quite complex but normally you shouldn't see it unless maybe you have a dual boot system and have to manually choose between say W10 and linux.

If you are getting a GRUB prompt screen this could be because there is a problem with the system firmware (BIOS or UEFI settings) or maybe the OS kernel isn't where GRUB thinks it should be or perhaps the configuration settings GRUB needs are inaccessible or incorrect.  Troubleshooting from the GRUB prompt screen should be possible and is probably much easier than eliminating GRUB and using a different boot loader.

You mention your system is an older HP - does it have UEFI or BIOS ?

LL ver 5.0 introduced support for UEFI by default.  Linux lite help manual has a good guide to installing on either BIOS or UEFI systems.

"I did not get asked but the system starts into a text interface of GRUB"

Which system? a LL 5 installed OS? or the LL 5 ISO on the USB? Are you dual booting? Have you previously had, or is there another Linux system on the machine? Is it UEFI?

Thank you stevef and TC for taking an interest in this issue, it is highly appreciated.
I found out what caused this "weird" behavior.
An old memory from way back and my earliest dabbling with LL came back, about very late version 2 and/or very early version 3. Back then I had some troubles with failing installations EVERY time I told the installer to download updates during the install. These problems with failing installations went away when I did NOT allow the installer to download updates.
So I gave it one more try telling the installer NOT  to download updates but I allowed installation of the additional functionality.
And alas, the system works like it should, no GRUB screen.
And for the super precise ones: NO CHANGE to the computer and/or to the UEFI/Bios.

Now, if I only could figure out how to mark this thread as SOLVED...

Glad you have found the problem.  The installation instructions recommend not to download updates when installing, though not for this reason.

To mark your thread as solved - go to your original post, click 'modify' (top right) and select the prefix.
