I don't think removing the kernels would have caused the issue ---- IF and depending on how you removed them..
If you used Light tweaks to remove them the in use kernel is not an option to be removed, you can only remove old ones.
If you removed by other means you could have inadvertently removed a set of kernel files..
Maybe could try Lite Tweaks and use it to install a kernel - perhaps the next newest version?? You can do in terminal..
You do have to reboot for kernels to take effect -- newer will usually be defaulted on next boot - choosing advanced in grub you can load previous
