I enjoy the hobbyist parts of making old hardware run myself, maybe because it keeps me running too, and maybe because if I cook it it doesn't cost me anything. Nowadays I would say that Pentium3 433/533 with 512 Ram is the bare minimum unless you build, compile, and install manually with Debian, Ubuntu or Arch and avoid graphics heavy software and/or add an old style PCI video card with another 512 of memory and an its own i486 chip, like the old Voodoos. Pentium4 2G or up with 1G Ram will handle newer software in 32bit decently. For 64bit Core2 Duos with 3G Ram is basically minimum anymore for reasonably good preformance. The Spectre Meltdown fiasco is going to cause a drop in price on some fairly decent hardware soon. Gen3s and i5s with 4G Ram are already going for around $100 US at some refurbishers. Intel has essentially reeled in support for anything older than Haswell no matter what you see reading around and the mitigations in Linux are still using the old opaque release. It's becoming a buyers market for refurb Intel stuff.
