Linux Lite 4.0 Suggestions welcomed
In my humble opinion, a light distro should be light in all aspects, so cumbersome programs should be replaced with their light equivalents and then the distribution itself will also weigh less. My suggestions are as such: instead of a slow and heavy monster Firefox-browser it is better to take an open-source Chromium-browser, as now Firefox has difficulties with installing browser addons; instead of huge Thunderbird it is better to take fast and light Geary as a mail client - like in ZorinOS, and instead of Gimp it is better to take Pinta.

As for the default set of icons I suggest a set of icons by Numix, which has two similar flat kits - round icons and square icons. In the Papirus icon set there are not all the required icons, besides they are not always correctly displayed when the user changes the colour of the desktop theme. What I like most in the Numix icons is that the icons of the trash-bin have two colours - red for the full trash-bin and green for the empty trash-bin, so it is very convenient to monitor the fullness of the trash-bin. One can also use colored folders by Numix.

To install and see the Numix icons one should enter only one command in the terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:numix/ppa && sudo apt update && sudo apt install numix-gtk-theme numix-icon-theme numix-icon-theme-circle numix-icon-theme-square numix-folders -y

I hope, you will enjoy this set of icons. I think, these icons are much more prettier than the default icon theme in LL 4.0. And don't forget to cache the icon set after installing it!

Sorry, still another couple of suggestions:

1) please add appgrid, a very fast and lightweight software-center, into Lite Software;

2) please add selection of the required language to Tor-browser installation in Lite Software for those people who do not know the English language. Or maybe Tor can be somehow translated into other languages after installation?

Thank you.

I wonder, if it is possible to add to the LL distro other tweaks like Ubuntu Tweak or Stacer, the last but not the least is even better as it has lots of (additional to Lite Tweaks) utilities "all in one" (hardinfo, baobab, cleaner and so on).

The app page (with screenshots) is here: https://github.com/oguzhaninan/Stacer

P.S. Sorry, too many suggestions and messages from me.

Sure! Though it seems rather strange to me that the topic has already been closed for suggestions but it is still open for discussions (?). Sorry for my misunderstanding your intention. And though I have a couple more ideas on how to make LL even lighter as for preinstalled software, I will give you no more suggestions, since I will have to compare this distro to another similar distribution but it is forbidden by the rules. Feel free to delete all my posts in this thread that do not meet the needed requirements and this message as well. It's OK. Thanks, and all the best to LL team.

No problem at all NN. I didn't lock the thread because people may still want to reply to others posts. Feel free to hang on to your suggestions for 4.2 when I start that thread. Smile

It would be utterly counter-intuitive to remove whoopsie and apport from a distro designed for new Linux users coming directly from MS. None of them are running LL headless servers, and generally they are inexperienced with Linux. The chances of an inexperienced user unwittingly breaking a new system over time would increase dramatically without whoopsie and apport.

But no one can prevent a user from doing it himself through the help of Linux communities, and for a beginner who has just migrated from Windows to Linux the last is similar to Chinese (I remember my first impression of Linux), in my humble opinion. And as for an unwitting system damage, former Windows users are accustomed to recovery of the system by means of automatic system restore points. It is good that for Linux there are analogues of the similar programs like deja-dup, systemback, timeshift and remastersys. Besides, some distributions have native programs for system recovery. And this is a great relief for inexperienced users.
