Linux Lite 4.0 Suggestions welcomed - Valtam - 02-04-2018
Hi everyone,
LETS DO THIS!
I'm now taking suggestions for new features in Linux Lite 4.0
What constitutes a good suggestion? (I'm going to number these so that I can help point out to those who make a suggestion that doesn't fit the below criteria)
1. An idea that benefits the majority. Personal ideas can be good, but remember, they are preferences personal to you.
2. Software, features, additions to existing software that will benefit most people.
3. New wallpapers: must be a minimum of 1080p, and less than 1mb, excellent quality (no pixelation) that has general appeal. Only png's and jpegs will be accepted and you must provide the actual source and accompanied license in a url.
4. Additions to the Help Manual. These are always welcome.
5. Avoid software that requires a PPA.
6. Cross platform software that computer users know of or use - must work on Mac Linux & Windows.
Example of a good suggestion:
I was thinking about adding a media multi converter to Lite Software. It will convert images, video, audio, documents etc. I think this is something that would benefit a lot of people.

What stays the same during a Series? (I'm going to assign a letter to these so that I can help point out to those who make a suggestion that doesn't fit the below criteria)
Usually the following:
a. Boot splash
b. Login screen
c. Grub
d. Default theme and icon set
e. Menu and menu structure
f. File manager, Terminal, Browser, Email client etc
I will read and consider every post in this thread. Please don't get disconcerted if I don't reply to your post. There is the chance I may think your idea would be better suited to the next Series for example.

Definitely recommend FF Multi Converter - I have installed it on LL series 2 and 3 with no problems and use it regularly.

Been doing a fair amount of Debian triage lately and have finally grown immensely frustrated enough with the tedious optical disk install method. As it happens, largely out of that frustration I came to use the Ubuntu write to disk application to prepare four USBs with bootable Debian 9 net install ISOs and all worked perfectly enough that I handed off some of the effort to a helper at the shop. I am curious why such an easy to use Ubuntu application is not native in LL. Far better than I expected it to be. Perhaps it deserves consideration for inclusion in 4.0. Perhaps related on another note I noticed the "back in time" repos are seriously out of date. Probably not a good choice for LL in the future. Onward as usual with the S-M debgluck hesitant to apt pin firefox in Debian on machines I rarely come in contact with just to get the newer more fully mitigated versions.
PS: Will try compiling blacksmith tomorrow in LL.

How about better support for Intel HD Graphics. XFCE 4 has a few problems with it, even with the display compositor turned on. Also how about adding Intel Graphics Update Toolto Lite Software Repo.

There is the Intel graphics stack that is for the Intel HD, it requires Linux hardware headers to make this work/of benefit above 1024x768 resolution, I don't know if in LL4 series there will be these headers.
I tried many other distros to see if any had these in the default release and none did at the time I tried, several months ago.
I have not check more recently.

I recently installed an Ubuntu16.04 LTS OS on a newer Intel box for someone and after detecting the hardware it installed the 4.13 kernel. This is part of a sudden new cooperation with Intel concerning its graphics stack. S-M is causing doors to open that were previously closed and outdated.

Something I would like to see in LL4 would be a usb writer and formater similar to the one in Linux Mint,it is simple and very easy to use and works first time every time,far easier to use than say Unetbootin in the Buntus !

Ralphy has made MintStick and other cool tools available for Linux Lite users! I love that formatter/writer. See my signature for the link to "Cool Tools."

While it might not technically meet the criteria, I'd like to see Etcher included. I've been using it since last summer and it works great!

I've helped several people make the switch to Linux, and I think it would be nice to adopt an OEM install like the Linux Mint distribution. With that, one can give a new user a computer, and that user can create their own username, password, hostname, etc. For them, it is a familiar experience to starting up a brand new computer.
