3.8: How to place the task bar at the top of the screen?
#1
Hi everyone,

I've searched this forum, and in other places, and found nothing that does work on my copy of 3.8 (because 32-bit-only on my 2006 MacBook Pro) about placing the task bar / menu bar at the top of the screen, so I thought I'd ask.

Supposedly, all you have to do is unlock it via the Properties applet, and drag-drop it where you want to put it, but that doesn't work for me.

I even tried to set it on the side, then drag-and-drop it, the way you would in Windows, but that doesn't work either.

I want to install Plank at the bottom of the screen, and sure enough, the menu bar gets in the way, big time. Of course, I could hide it altogether, but then I'd lose the clock and all the other icons in the notification area.

What should I do?

I'm not running 3.8 but in my version if I right click on the bar I get a choice of move.  Does 3.8 have this?

Hi Dave, and thanks for taking the time.

I just checked, and I can move separate elements, but the only choices I have when it comes to the whole bar are bottom, side (left only, apparently) and "desktop bar" (?), which basically plants the menu bar vertically and smack in the middle of the screen, from where it won't move even if you send the National Guard.

As I said in my OP, I'm stuck with 3.8 on this Mac, so maybe it's a feature that was added to subsequent versions of LL but is not available on 3.8, at least not out-of-the-box.  Sad

You can place the panel wherever you want, it's just a bit tricky Wink
1. Right-click on the panel and select Panel settings or some similar wording.
2. In the settings uncheck the box that reads Lock panel
3. Place the cursor to the right or left border of the panel and left-click on it, now you can grab it and move around at will.

and that's it.

Hope this helps! Smile
