github going MS
#1
MS already is a substantial user of github so not much of a surprise, but still kinda sad in some ways.

If the sale goes through, we won't be hosting anymore code on Github.

Is there code already there which they can get their grubby littles on? Or can it be removed, or what?

Actually, it's an ingenious way to control linux activity without attempting to buy out distros. Github wasn't just a place to put downloadable software; it was a centralized site for creation, collaboration, communication and review. And it was just as accessable for a single developer as it was for a large company that believed in open software. I'm not saying this in a tin hat sort of way, people will still work together to create new things. However, this changes things, if nothing else, where there will be multiple platforms to share, and as these platforms differ more and more from each other in the future, users will pick one over the other (or more likely, their distro will choose for them) and sharing will become more and more fragmented.

Divide and conquer? I was agreeing with you all the way until I though about how many distros there already are, but I guess you spoke of sharing in general...
Also, I havent really been on it a lot but the site seemed to host lots of different things for all OSes, could be they just wanted something "specific" on there that they won't mention publicly... oooh a conspiracy theory! Wink . It could pay off for MS but let's hope it's just water in the eyes.

PS : Funny how we speak of the site in the past tence already ... Wink
