LL hangs at beginning of install
#1
a Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz dell 745[refurbished] on-board video. 64bit 4gb ram 1tb hdd. LL "live cd", loads and works, but to install, the first page is language, i select 'continue' and it just hangs "waiting" up to20 minutes with no HDD activity. i am using a usb stick. i tried 2 different downloads "burned" on 2 diff sticks using rufus. exact same results. thanks in advanced

i can add; verified legacy mode, tried dvd and usb stick. "live cd" works fine. once i select "continue" at language, dvd activity stops. "waiting" icon remains. seems to be a stumper, eh?  :o

Hello C0nfused,

do you highlight a language to select one before clicking continue ?

It says the graphics is Intel, it can be problematic with drivers sometimes, mine still is anyhow.

Here is the link to the manual, centre page scroll to the end of the links list, it has info on the preferred ways/tools to burn the ISO to dvd or USB

I just went through this on an old hard drive for my father. It is caused by a corrupt partition. I used the live and deleted all the partitions on the drive then made a new partition and rebooted into an install and it went through fine.

thanks guys. i'm kinda convinced its a BIOS issue since mint nor LL [dvd or usb] will get past the language page. and , yes i did change and reselect english. if i do get it figured i'll post. cheers

If it is a brand new refurb with Windows 10 and you intend to DUAL boot with LL do NOT delete any partitions. You must turn off fast boot, and secure boot, and enable CSM Legacy mode in the BIOS You FIRST must shrink the Windows partition © USING WINDOWS creating a new empty (unformatted) partion on the drive. The LL installer will then format and partition that empty space on the HDD and not ruin your Windows installation.

well,, i connected an SSD and was able to load LL on it no problem. So somehow the HHD that came with it is "write protected"? dunno. but i am happy so thanks to all.

It is good to read you have got LL loaded on your SSD. Smile

On the drive that is write protected can you try this.
Sometimes Ubuntu can make it read only, to make it read/write it says to use, from boot, Ubuntu recovery mode, then from the menu select root and enter -

Code:
mount -o rw,remount /

You could then try to install LL on the drive that was previously write protected.

If this is an untouched refurb with Windows 10 Dell there could already be five partitions on the drive and though they may not all show up in Windows disk tools they are there. Just shrink the © windows ntfs partition using windows disk tools and leave the empty space unformatted. Install LL there without swap and use a swap file instead of a partition.
