Upgrading from 1.0.6
#1
I would like to upgrade the operating system on my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop to 2.6 if possible and need some help. I think that this computer meets the minimum requirements but from what I have read I can't upgrade from this older version 1.0.6. So I think that I would download the ISO and boot from the flash drive and install a replacement version. That sounds easy enough but I am just a bit nervous and could use some advise. I take for granted that all added programs and files will be lost during this so I will save all I can and reinstall later.

Advise would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Les

Doesn't look like you can go from 1.0.6 to 2.6
Give https://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/relea...-released/ a look..

You cannot upgrade from Linux Lite 1.0.0, 1.0.2, 1.0.4, 1.0.6, 1.0.8

Might want to dig through to see if you can upgrade to 2.x then 2.6??

**Updated**
Upgrading can only occur within a Series. For example you can upgrade from Linux Lite 2.0 to Linux Lite 2.4, but not from Linux Lite 2.0 to Linux Lite 3.0.

You will not be able to upgrade from where you are to the 2.x series and then to 2.6.  I believe this is because:

    1) The 1.x series has an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS base.
    2) The 2.x series has an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS base.
    3) The 3.x series will have an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS base.

I would suggest you first run the Live CD version of 2.6 to make sure everything works as expected (printer, wifi, etc).  If so, and you want to go forward, then backup your /home folder.  This will make of copy of all your data.  Install 2.6 and copy the /home backup (from 1.06) to your new /home (LL 2.6).

If you created a separate home partition in your 1.06 install, then all you'd really have to do is install 2.6 to your root partition.  Your home partition would be left alone, though I'd still recommend backing it up first.  If you don't have a separate home partition, you'll want to create one going forward.  More on that can be seen here:

A separate home partition makes installing other distros or new LTS versions of the same distro simpler.  It's worth knowing about it now.

I do so appreciate the comments and advise. I think I can copy the download  "linux-lite-2.6-32bit.iso" to a dvd, but I am just hoping that, that would be what your are talking about when you said run the Live CD version to try on my laptop. And then I hope that the statement on the download page "Login to the live desktop is automatic" is true but I'm not sure. Hopefully then if I can run the new 2.6 from the dvd and things seem to work ok I will be able to install it and remove 1.0.6 at the same time by booting from the dvd or a download on a flash drive.
I know that to you these are dumb sounding statements or questions but I have never done this and could use some hand holding. I'm not worried about loosing anything other than the use of the old laptop so I won't attempt to add partitions now.

Thanks again,
Les

Some of the best information to help get you ready to install 2.6 is located in the help manual.
This is the link to the online installation guide.
