Wine Worpad

Using  Terminal I get

Word Pad eventually opens OK but ---Will this cause any problems later eg Printing and Saving .


Is using the Terminal the only way to open Wine Wordpad - there is NotePad in the  > wine  > Programs > Accessories > Notepad but not Wordpad

A much simpler solution is to use the text editor in LL, Leafpad.  Not sure what you gain running a Windows text editor under Linux...

I'm totally aware that the reason behind your post might be rooted in your curiosity to just see if you could get Wordpad to work in Wine.  If that's the case, I get it.  And if you do get it to work, I'll be paying attention.  But in case that's not your motive, I'll add the following:

To me, Leafpad is more similar to Notepad than Wordpad.  I have not tried to install Wordpad in Wine or know if there is even an option for it.  If you want a lightweight word processor Linux option to Wordpad, and for some reason you didn't want to use LibreOffice Writer, you might want to consider Abiword.  From my experience, the apps built for Linux have much better performance. 

Lastly, if you can open Wordpad in a terminal, then that's not the only way to open it.  You could Create a Launcher/Shortcut for it.

If you don't like leafpad (I don't because it's too basic), install another text editor.  Use synaptic package manager (menu -> install.remove software) and search for text editor.

Based on Colin's post, it didn't seem to me like he was looking for a text editor.  Furthermore, he's a forum regular, so one could presume that he's familiar with text editor options.  I could be wrong, but my guess is he either likes the challenge of getting Microsoft Wordpad to work in Linux using Wine, or he's looking for a scaled down version of a word processor like Microsoft Wordpad.

I have the answer!  Check this out.


I got this by doing the following:  Menu->Wine->Browse C:drive.  I opened the windows folder.  Then the system32 folder.  I searched for wordpad.exe.  I clicked on it.  And then it was done.

To make it even sweeter, I created a shortcut as a test.  Just right click on the wordpad.exe file and choose Send To->Desktop (Create Link). 

Piece of cake.

Wordpad comes with WINE & the right click > Open With option to open files with it stays there once you've done it once.
I find sometimes it will open files the others won't.

You guessed correctly that I wanted a scaled down word processor.
In Windows I used "Jarte" which I found suited my needs . It is supposed to working Linux using Wine but I cannot input any text. That is why I tried to see if Wordpad worked as Jarte was built on Wordpad .

At my age (71) I like to keep things as simple as I can that suffice for my needs . Having lots of bells and whistles that need a large learning curve is a waste of effort if they are never to be used . I have found that RTF files serve  me well and can be read with most programs . I prefer to use a program that RTF is its native format so I do not need to export / etc to get RTF files

I can respect your want to use a fileformat. But not sure if wine would ever fit me. But I know for a fact abiword handles rtf format. Both opening and saving. Consider using that over stuff in wine, while it may run.. its almost always far from ideal.

I understand.  If performance becomes an issue with Wordpad, the native word processor (LibreOffice Writer) can be customized to suite your needs.  I think you'll find it feature rich enough for the power users, but lightweight enough for you.  And we're here to help with and shorten any learning curves you encounter.

For example, if you do the following, rich text format (rtf) will become the default format for all documents you create in LibreOffice Writer.

1) Go to Menu->Office->New Document.  LibreOffice Writer will open.
2) Click on Tools, and then Options.
3) In the window that opens, you'll see an arrow next to Load/Save.  Click on that, and then select General.
4) In the section "Default File Format and ODF Settings," select Text document for your Document type and Rich Text for the Always save as option.
5) Then click OK.

From then on, by default, each document you create using LibreOffice Writer will automatically be saved in rich text format.

If there are still too many bells and whistles with LibreOffice Writer, do consider Abiword.  A screenshot can be seen here: http://www.abiword.org/screenshots/AbiWo...-Gnome.png.  It is lightweight and scaled down, and should out-perform Microsoft Wordpad using Wine.

I had tried AbiWord  but was unhappy with its Default Save option to its own AWT
Checking on Google It appears that it can be changed but only using the Terminal.
