[SOLVED] Log file error
#1
Hi,

My first post here. I'm just setting up my first production machine with Linux Lite after testing it for quite some time. Congrats and BIG THANKS to the developers for such an outstanding distribution!

I just run into the problem that syslog is not logging, a topic that has been brought up in this post:
https://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/index...#msg5233By t

I'm a bit confused that such a fundamental issue has not been fixed before the release!? With this issue obviously even the provided Log File Viewer is not working.

May I please ask for clarification and whether the developers don't consider a working log file mechanism an important part of the system?

As the OP of the post above I'd be very keen on using LL in the future in production environments and as recommendation to customers/ users.

Thanks for your efforts!

Linux Lite is aimed at new people to linux. I doubt they even know this file exists, let alone read it. The simple fix is:

Code:
sudo chown syslog:adm /var/log/syslog

Code:
sudo chmod 640 /var/log/syslog

Code:
sudo service rsyslog restart

You can try the same for auth.log

We shouldn't have to intervene here, this is something the base OS should have taken care of.

Thanks for the prompt reply and clarification!

I was not aware of that this issue has been already present in Ubuntu (not using it). Wow, in a LTS version! I assumed there must be a reason you guys didn't fix it. Now it's clear.

I'm not new to Linux - more than 15 years enjoying the ride - and yet will use LLĀ  Big Grin Especially now, as this has been clarified Smile

Hello!

Welcome to the LL forums. I'm glad you were able to finally get a resolution to Canonical's (Ubuntu's) problem HERE!

I took a quick look at some of the logs here. I see value in them as a troubleshooting tool...
