VICE (the Versatile Commodore Emulator) & BBS Connections
#1
Hi

I am new to Linux and I want to connect to a commodore 64 BBS. I have Linux lite 2.0 installed on an old laptop. I am running Vice

for Linux (I also have Wine installed and have a copy of winvice on the machine as well.) I have a terminal program for the C64

emulator. I have been trying to get this to work but I cannot and I am getting a little frustrated.

Here is what I have done so far;

I installed TCPSER with
sudo apt-get install tcpser

Also made sure NETCAT was installed with
sudo apt-get install netcat
(I read somewhere that I need this)

I then did this from a command window in linux
nc 127.0.0.1 25232. I read that I had to initialize Netcat like this.

Question 1: Why is the IP address 127.0.0.1? should it not be the IP assigned to my Linux box by my internet router?

Then I did this from a command window in linux
tcpser -v 25232 -s 1200 -p 6400
Question 2: I must leave this command window open while trying to connect. Is this correct?

Then I opened Vice (Linux version)
in settings under the RS232 settings menu: ◦Turn on “Userport RS232 emulation

under “Userport RS232 baud rate set baud to 1200
Under “Userport RS232 device” select “Exec process”.
◦Under “Program name to exec…” type | nc localhost 25232

Question 3 : should I change localhost to the IP address assigned to my Linux box?

I then saved my settings in Vice, closed vice and restarted it.

I then opened my Terminal software (CCGMS 5.5) with vice and tried to dial a BBS IP address
Question 4: should I try using striketerm instead?

When I dial the BBS IP address, It just says no carrier
The command window where I did the tcpser -v 25232 -s 1200 -p 6400 command doesn’t show anything, it doesn’t tell me that it is

trying to connect.

I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong.

Can someone please help. I am going crazy here.

Is it because the BBS I am dialing is not working.
Do you have the IP of a known working BBS?

Please help

Thanks in advance

Just a suggestion. I would join http://www.linuxquestions.org/ and try posting there.

Lot's of smart users there running all kinds of gear. It is a slackware based forum and if you used the search term

Quote:site:www.linuxquestions.org
in googles search box as well in another tab
Quote:site:ubuntuforums.org

You should maybe get some joy/solutions already posted to help you solve your problem.

Lastly. I bookmark http://www.googlubuntu.com/ that search engine when solving my own problems besides using the above search
tricks I learned using linux.

Hi Bubblesdee,
I don't have any experience with your situation but I poked around on the Vice website and found these.

Have you looked at the Vice knowledge base? Here's a link but it's down due to a recent hacking. If you click the link they're showing a status.

Here's a link to the resources page of the Vice website in case you haven't come across it yet.

Hello!

By any chance, is it Color64 Term, written by Greg Pfountz?

Back in the day (late '80s), I ran a couple of AWESOME C-64 BBSs on Color64 BBS software, also written by Greg Pfountz. A 20MB ICT Data Chief HD was a lot of space back then!

Even though technology has come a long way since then, I still miss those old days, when each fairly large city had dozens of BBSs, if not hundreds - most of them having some kind of theme to them. It was like creating and running your own world...

There seems to be a few things on Youtube:

Yes, you need to know a working BBS
In the details you supplied above, you don't appear to be connecting to anything to get a response from.?

If you are trying to connect to bbs sites there are telnet client add-ons for Firefox that can be added from the add-on manager in the browser. Before deciding to use an add-on you should do a web search about the add-on to make sure other people haven't had a problem with it. To find add-ons for Firefox you click on tools in the menu and then click add-ons. When the add-ons page loads type "telnet client" in the search bar on the right top of the page. Hope you find what your looking for.
