Update Failure this morning

I got the Updates available pop up this morning, had a quick glance and approved. Then I got a failure and request that I post this here in the forum

Not sure if this is a related issue or not. I've installed BODHI and LLITE on same computer (Windows + Apple free) I was planning on installing a few others to test but haven't gotten to it yet. Anyhow all was well until at some stage LLITE wouldn't log me in and soon thereafter GRUB stopped functioning so I could only log into BODHI (1st on GRUB list - couldn't scroll down). I tinkered around from GRUB trying to increase space 21GB for each partition and adjust things around, Copied partition and placed in a new location. Still nothing worked, then after 5-6 weeks GRUB is working, both instances of LLITE are working, but now BODHI has dissapeared from GRUB  :o

Anybody else experience such behaviour? I am guessing one of the programs I installed on LLITE or BODHI or an UPDATE on LLITE screwed up my LLITE install. Not sure how it got fixed. Perhaps a recent attempt to go into Advance/Secure mode and run updates.?

The df utility will show disk capacity and used/available figures across the mounted file systems.
Can you open a terminal and post up the results of the command

Looks like your disk may be full  -  E: You don't have enough free space in /var/cache/apt/archives/

Also you can run the command as suggested to clean up a bit of space...

So Just logged in the 2nd LLite instance and had the same result as what I posted yesterday.

I will try it on the other one, but just looking at GParted (image as PNG in tar.gz attachment) I see what you mean, the original Instance is showing 19.53 GiB size and 18.78 GiB used. Given the sequence of Partitions, what would be the best way to increase that one without messing things up. Bodhi is right up against it in the sequence. Or am I better off expanding LLITE2 and doing away with Linux Lite?

How do you plan your multi instance partitions? I got the recommendation from a webpage showing how to install multiple instances of Linux and the recommendation was 20 GiB for each. Obviously after installing a few programs that doesn't suffice. It's not like I have space issues allocating more on the 2 TiB SSD  ;D Just didn't know what would be a good practice as partitions are not dynamic and I didn't realise moving them around would be inflexible. I understood the recommendation had inbuilt flexibility.  :o : Obviously misunderstood...

As you've found 20GB can be a restriction for a working system.  Suggesting good practice for partition sizes is difficult as everyone's needs are different.  I think the 20GB recommendation may assume your /home directories are on another partition or that you aren't going to be keeping a lot of user data.

I have a couple of machines for general tasks.  One has a 250GB SSD and is solely for LL ver 5.2 and the SSD is currently is 7% used.  This machine also has a 1.5TB drive for user data which is 50% full. The choice to use the full SSD for LL was straight forward as I had no need to compromise.

The second machine came to me as a 1TB disk Win10 machine.  I wanted to use LL on it but needed to retain W10 for some applications so needed to dual boot.  I shrank the main Windows partition down to 300GB which left 200GB free space for W10 to use and set the LL partition to 200GB.  200GB is probably too much for LL but the machine had 600GB of free space and there is still 400GB unused space I can use for expansion of LL 5.2 or installing another system.

I understand it is possible to relocate partitions with gparted (or similar tool) but it's not something I've done.

I'm a bit confused by your post - are you also having a space problem installing updates in the LLite2 installation which has 60G and is showing 40G free ?

Recommendation #1: Use Lite Tweaks. It's quite efficient and designed to keep you out of the CLI. Cleans package cache, removes old kernels, removes old packages, frees up system memory.
I don't have a single LL installation that uses over 8gig jfs on the disk, nor does anybody I know. My Debian 10 gnome system, which has everything but the kitchen sink installed on it, only has about a 40 to 50gig file system, dependent on how many VMs I'm running at the time. If you know you are going to save large amounts of media, setup a media storage partition separate from your system. How much memory are you allocating to Linux Lite? Are you specifying a certain amount of memory? When you do so installation automatically configures swap file accordingly. Have you been regularly compiling software on these systems? Have you had multiple failed or interrupted updates on either? Safe rule of thumb for Linux Lite, 21gig disk space, 3 to 4gig of memory and system should never be memory challenged or disk space challenged throughout the series release cycle.

Hello!
It is a poor strategy that "recommended" one. The author, seems to be a rookie.
Here is the interesting part:
(1) Linux is capable to use the same SWAP partition, regardless the number or type of installation. So, you only need ONE SWAP PARTITION.
(2) Second aspect, is REUSING THE /home partition.
The last thing I would like, is to do again and again the same settings for all applications I am running. So, I use a /home partition. This holds all the specific config and user data for all apps I use.
(3) Now, let's go to the main issue: Any Linux distro, uses at most 14 GB of disk space, considering that you make a heavy use of lots of apps. Otherwise, it takes some 8 - 9 GB. So, You need at most 16 GB/ installation.
(4) At setup time, you need to set up the default mounted partitions. And here it comes the /home partition. Use it, without formatting. You need to know exactly the name of the partition (Say... /dev/sda6). In order to avoid heavy lifting trouble, I use the ext2 FS for the /home, so I can see exactely which one is the /home. Even more, I use a certain size for this partition: 60 GB. I usually use some 6 - 8 GB of it, but sometimes I need more, so it fits my needs. In case you make a heavy use of /home, you might need to reserve more than 60 GB. I prefer using dedicated partitions for my projects, such as /projects, /video, /mydat, etc. This allows me to backup as needed, instead of making a single huge backup.
And in the end...
Now, assuming that you want to have a lot of installations, you need to do some basic maths, as follows:

/datapartition1 = ?
/datapartition2 = ?

TOTALS = [0,95 x DriveSize] = ?
It would be great to know exactly how much space uses each FULL installation, since this will help save some disk space and this sometimes means more than 1 - 2 GB. Might be up to 5 - 8 GB/ each installation!
