Upgrading from 4.0 to 4.6

I'm a non-power user. I've been using 4.0 for over a year now without much trouble except for constant problems with thumb drives, which would sure be nice to be rid of (if that's possible). I have never upgraded Linux Lite before and I have a couple of questions.

What do I lose when I do this? I assume all my desktop customizations go, but do I need to manually reinstall non-OS apps like browsers, etc? What about logins, passwords for the browsers, email program, etc?

My Lite Upgrade is the correct one, according to the upgrade notice.

I noticed that the directions tell you to run Timeshift first to do a backup, but Timeshift has NEVER worked for me and I ended up deleting it. I use Clonezilla, although I have never had to restore the system because it's never been necessary. But I would certainly run it before trying anything. I don't know if this would make a difference - don't see how, but I'm just trying to provide complete information.

Going from 4.0 to 4.6 or any in series upgrade is about as easy as a typical update...


It never hurts thou to have a backup on the in case chance (updates too)


I would use the GUI - from menu Lite Upgrade, do an update prior and any backups you want/need...
As for stored info - all should be retained. It's when you go to the next series (to LL5.x) would you need to do a fresh install - where you would need to add everything back..

It's hard for me to believe you've never run updates since 4.0. Run the command below in a terminal to see where you're really at with updates. Post the result. You may have to fully update first before upgrading within the series.

Run: apt policy lite-upgrade-series4

I up*date* 4.0 about once a week and have done all along; I've never up*graded* it. It still works fine, except for the USB thing I mentioned. Really, if it weren't for that, I probably wouldn't bother except that I figure by now there may have been enough incremental stuff that it might be worth it.

The release announcement link you provided is the reason why I was contemplating the upgrade. I've just never done this before, that's why I asked. In the old days when I used Linux (15 years ago?), you had to just reinstall it. It was a major pain.

I think he meant that he hasn't upgraded between series but he surely has had  updated & upgraded his system just like he said "once a week". Going from LL 4.0 to 4.6 shouldn't be a problem, just do as firenice03 suggest and use the tools included in LL for that.

Timeshift doesn't like my computer either.  Fortunately Systemback is still supported and available through a PPA here.  While I usually hate PPAs, this one I use since it seems to be the only way to get and maintain Systemback.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has had trouble with Timeshift. It sounds great, but when I first installed LL I tried using it and it totally fell on its face and I ended up just reinstalling the OS. Luckily, I hadn't had too much time to tweak things and it was comparatively easy to do that. I would hate to have to do it that way now, though. But Clonezilla seems to work for me; it's just a bit less convenient due to the need to boot from it first.

Upgraded to 4.6 with no problems, and it took only as long as a normal short update - great! Thanks, Jerry!

Only issue I have is not OS related; Thunderbird's new version won't use the theme I had and apparently there aren't any themes available for it yet beyond the defaults. This is so trivial that it's really not worth mentioning. So pleased to have the upgrade go that easily.

[EDIT] I thought I would look at Timeshift to see if it works better for me now, but I can't find it. It's not in Menu/System, and it does not appear in the Synaptic Package Manger either. Weird.

[member=8136]Tyrannocaster[/member]  Linux Lite 4.x series is based on ubuntu bionic (18.04). Timeshift was not added to the official ubuntu repositories until ubuntu 18.10 I think.

You will need to add a ppa to install Timeshift.

Or Systemback, if you prefer.  A few of us do.  And it was the default in Linux Lite once upon a time.
