Android phone-smashed screen -data recovery from phone; possible?
#1
Have been asked if I can recover data (photos music etc) from Sony Xperia Z5 with a smashed screen.  Switches on , phone screen lights up but not functional.  cable to PC and PC identifies it as mtp://[usb:001,021]/ and icon appears on desktop (E6853).  However can not get to files.  Aim to recover photos/music etc.  Regrettably owner can not find any data on their android allotted cloud  Any ideas appreciated.  Thank you.PS Tried Vysor app of Google Chrome but Phone does not appear on connection options.

A mtp listed usb shows up but will not open a file tree in Thunar? Did you look in Thunar directly for the mounted usb?

You might want to try this but make sure it's the Ubu 18.04 version:

Trinidad Thanks for responding.
Thunar shows E6853 as "Mounted" and now as mtp://[usb:001,024]/
No other information showing, even when double clicking on the E6853 "devices" of right clicking - opening in other window. On the phone the screen is lit up and shows the locked padlock symbol.  The latter is unresponsive.  This is using Linux Lite  3.6 on the desktop up to date .

In desperation I booted up an old partition of Windows 7 on the lappy, again Windows did not syc with media player stating "no data"
Data is definitely on there though.

Tha Lappy has LL4.6, on the other partition, if you think that would be better; will follow you Link on the Lappy

Trinidad, Thank you for the Link , using the lappy @ LL4.6 also using the image as executable.  Got to the photos on the phone in built memory.  Micro SD card has been removed and is accessible separately,  i.e phone camera bit.  Smile  However was unable to get to the guts of the Android systsem  , in particular the whatsapp part- purpose to extract  videos and pictures sent as attachments to historic messages.  Any ideas?
IAs an as aside, Using Thunar, An "Internal Storage" folder appears and  I am able to get deep down inside my older Android phone and get all photos etc from whatsapp history as well as phone downloads etc.

Sounds like only the screen is broken. Screen replace? without erasing. if battery hasn't run empty fingerprint login and then connect usb? Or does the screen show image but is unresponsive then usb keyboard can be option if the phone supports usb otg.

[member=149]newtusmaximus[/member] I don't know if you've already solved this but have you tried using adb? To install it, open a terminal and type
Code:
sudo apt-get install adb
once installed, connect your device via usb to your pc and in a terminal type
Code:
adb devices
and you'll see the device listed. Then type
Code:
adb shell
now you can use some unix commands. Type
Code:
ls
to list the contents on the device. Once you see the location of the files/data you want to save type
Code:
adb pull
followed by the full path of the dir containing the data within the phone and the location in your pc where you want it to save it i.e
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/my_data /home/newtusmaximus/
You can type
Code:
adb --help
to get a list of commands you can use with adb. I use it to install/reinstall android,

NOTE: It should be noted that for this to work, usb debugging must be enabled in the android device, otherwise you should start it in download or recovery mode, then connect it to the pc and follow the instructions.

Hope this helps! Smile
Without each others help there ain't no hope for us Smile

The problem here is that if you try to connect using thunar or other file manager the phone is only in basic USB charging mode.

In order to enable file transfer you have to be able to tell the phone to allow MTP or PTP or file transfer (wording varies from phone to phone but that's the general principle)

This is required as a basic security feature to stop anyone just accessing files on a phone.

If you cannot interact with the phone via the screen then you'll not be able to enable USB Debug to allow connection via adb.

It may well be screen replacement is the only option.

Thank you all for your help/suggestions. was just hoping there was a way round - screen totally unresponsive and was hoping that the phone could be unlocked via a pc using the existing phone unlock  password..  .  New screen ordered.  Hopefully  what is on the phone will still be there.  Still not sure why I could not get the Vysor Chrome app not to work i.e call up the phone welcoming screen so it could be unlocked remotely

When your phone is smashed or broken then also there is also a chance to recover the data stored on it. But before that, if you have backup of the data then restore your data from there. If no then use Broken Android Data Extraction, professional software to retrieve missing files from Android phone. Whether your phone screen is smashed or broken, there is a possbility to recover Android data from broken screen.
