Can't Install Linux Lite on Acer Aspire
#11
(01-06-2019, 08:37 AM)TMG1961 link Wrote: How did you actually install LL? Did you after booting go straight to installing LL or did you start LL first and then installed it from there? What options did it give you when installing. Did you wipe the harddrive in LL with partition drives before installing LL? I used the option delete in partition drives and then create new partition and format it to ext4. I have W10 and LL 4.2 install on one harddrive installed W10 first and then LL, used the something else option and did install from there.

Installed it through the Direct Install option, I chose erase disk and Install LL.

I am a Linux noob, but I am sure this is a BIOS problem. It just doesn’t allow any other SO that is not W10.

How do I fix this?

I would boot up the live usb drive and from within LL delete all partitions on the drive and then format the drive as ext4. Then install LL. It could be that there is still a partition on the drive that the installation of LL doesnt see. Notting to loose and doesnt take very long to do a new install of LL.

If you no longer want Windows --- I would 2nd [member=3473]TMG1961[/member] as you could use gparted to wipe out all drives/partitions..

If you want to keep windows - I would probably restore Windows/ensure still working then attempt another install of LL (remove all created LL partitions)...

It may help posting a screenshot of your partitions to help aid..

When (re)installing LL - I would choose the " Something Else" option, here you can create the partitions. You can also choose the boot loader location.
I chose the main partition where LL resides on mine (i.e. if /sdc1 is where LL is installed put the boot loader on /sdc)
You'll also have the options to create "/" and "/home" along with swap.

With the UEFI version of LL you can leave Secureboot and UEFI enabled.. You may however need to check that Fastboot is disabled in Windows (control panel) if you are keeping Windows.

If choosing to completely remove Windows from the disk - I would as suggested use the Live environment, launch gparted and do so within, then run the installer.

Thank you for your responses.

Formatting the HDD with Gparted worked fine. It no longer shows Windows Boot Manager, we are getting close !!! ...But still wont boot to LL.

Formated the drive with the options suggested

But upon booting the Laptop shows this message

Then it goes straight to this. No other booting options. And the HDD does not appear as a boot option by pressing F12.

Make sure the Windows Boot Manager IS NOT first in the Boot order in the BIOS (picture 3 in the #4 reply here).

Windows Boot Manager disappeared after I wiped the HDD with gparted

Right now I have the HDD as the first boot option but it won’t boot to LL

You booted the laptop and did choose start linux lite. Then removed all the partitions on the drive, formatted it to ext4 and then installed LL while you were in the live session and used the default settings during the setup. If you boot the laptop and press f12 and select the harddrive to boot from what happens then? What looks the screen like when you press f12

The new Bios boot order, without Windows, is as follows:

Yes, I followed all those steps, But when I press F12 after reboot, It would only show the USB, not the HDD.

However, I haven't tried installing LL with the "something else" option, because I really don't know what to do there, sorry. I am just choosing to do a clean install, "erase disk and Install LL".

This is the "something else" screen:

Also, when I'm installing the SO on the Live LL enviroment, and mark the download WIFI and other drivers, it would get stuck on grub2, specifically when copying the "x86_64-efi plataform"

The Something Else - looks ok, the boot loader on /sda and LL on /sda1
- Maybe the only thing, mark /sda1 as root "/" (the label) - this shouldn't be affecting but may not hurt.

Also if you can connect to the internet by a wired connection.
- Do a default install, don't select to install updates/drivers/codecs, use the blank defaults (you can install any/all after install).

Once it installs, you should have "ubuntu" listed in the boot order (make this primary, if not)
