Installed on usb stick but can't boot
#1
I've installed linux lite on a usb stick but my laptop can't seem to boot it. I installed it using unetbootin and when that didn't work followed the instructions in the help manual to install it using the command line and it still won't work. In the fist instance I can select the usb drive from the boot menu but nothing happens and in the second instance the usb isn't even an option. Any help greatly appreciated

Consider checking the MD5Sum of your downloaded ISO to verify the integrity of your download and using Etcher instead to create your bootable media.  See the following link:

I haven't been able to get etcher to work either but if your other fix doesnt work I'll try getting etcher to work on another machine. Cheers

The md5sum is not a fix.  It is a check to verify that your downloaded ISO file was correctly downloaded.  There is a md5sum number listed for the properly downloaded file at https://linuxliteos.com/download.php.  You just need to verify that the md5 checksum for the file you downloaded matches the md5 checksum that is listed at the above link.

As far as Etcher goes, I don't know how to make it any easier.  Etcher is easier to use than UNetbootin, and in my experience, its results are more reliable.

If Etcher doesn't work, I can't see how anything would. It's the easiest point and click, cross platform option out there.

And Etcher is really purtty! Wink
Sorry, couldn't help myself.
Also, if for some reason you have to use Windows to create keys, I used Rufus a few hundred times too,  before I found Etcher on Linux Wink

Cheers!

Might not be the how your creating but the system...
Are you on Linux or Windows? You mention command line?? But regardless Etcher is the way to go..

If its not reading the USB - Ensure "secureboot" is disabled in BIOS

Also, which may be a hang up, LL should be installed in Legacy mode vs. UEFI (turn UEFI off or use the experimental UEFI LL version) also in BIOS..

If this is a Windows box, disabling FastBoot from within the Windows Control Panel is advised.

If a 32bit system use 32bit LL (3.x series) - LL4.x is 64bit only

May not hurt to post the laptops model, may be one of those 64bit-ers with 32bit UEFI...
LL4.8 UEFI 64 bit ASUS E402W - AMD E2 (Quad) 1.5Ghz  - 4GB - AMD Mullins Radeon R2
LL5.8 UEFI 64 bit Test UEFI Kangaroo (Mobile Desktop) - Atom X5-Z8500 1.44Ghz - 2GB - Intel HD Graphics
LL4.8 64 bit HP 6005- AMD Phenom II X2 - 8GB - AMD/ATI RS880 (HD4200)
LL3.8 32 bit Dell Inspiron Mini - Atom N270 1.6Ghz - 1GB - Intel Mobile 945GSE Express  -- Shelved
BACK LL5.8 64 bit Dell Optiplex 160 (Thin) - Atom 230 1.6Ghz - 4GB-SiS 771/671 PCIE VGA - Print Server
Running Linux Lite since LL2.2

I was trying to run etcher on my laptop with xubuntu installed and it just wouldn't start. Then tried running it on another pc with elementary os on it and kept getting an error saying the image was on the drive I was trying to install it on or something which it wasn't. Got it running on my laptop which I ended up installing mx linux on since i couldn't get this os to work  Tongue and mx linux only started working after making the adjustments to my bios that firenice03 recommended to get linux lite working.

Finally got it working by downloading the UEFI version. Still not totally sure what the issue was but thanks for all the help!

You have to right click on Etcher and Make it executable first.

Could you please explain that more. Does it mean that those 64bit-ers with 32bit UEFI. cannot use linuxlite? I happen to have one with Atom X5-Z8300
