On 4.0 install Partitions don't match help manual

during install on another computer (I want dual boot - "Something else") the actual partition sda3 is ntfs formatted. It has 12Gb, about 10gb used.

Looking at gParted in the live iso sda3 is "Recovery image".

Question 1:  I have backups of the Windows 7 data and system on external drive. Do I need to retain this "sda3 NTFS Recovery Image" in order to continue using the Windows 7 partition, or can I safely install LL 4.0 in sda3 ?

Computer is a HP Elitebook.

Assuming I do not need to retain  "recovery image"  ....

...  during install (dry run) when I select dev/sda3 > Change, I get options as per manual, ie    Use as: ext4etc;  Format; mount point: /        I also get SIZE: 12000  with - + 

Question 2:  is this + where I increase the Partition to the size I want, eg 50gb ?

It's well over a year since I did a dual boot install from scratch, I don't remember it being like this.

You can overwrite sd3 the Window recovery partition, ofc you won't be able to recover Windows anymore. Q2 - you can't + the 12Gb to 50Gb unless you have 38gb somewhere else as spare. We'd have to know all of your partitions and their sizes before advising further. Perhaps screenshot Disk Management in Windows.

I've taken note re attachments. As regards Imgur, it is said to be insecure, and in fact my Firefox blocks its images - I never see your images posted in release announcements, for example, but if that's the price for privacy I'm ok with it.

I think when I get time I'll type out what I see on the Win Disk Management, that should do it.

It's curious though, last year on this dell I was offered (for dual boot) a new partition something like /ext4 with a sizing option - I got this 3 times, 2 previous distros and LL. Anyway, I'm not complaining, things change, and I am greatly impressed with LL 4.2 here on this dell.

I cannot find where I first saw doubts about Imgur's privacy, but the following may be of interest  https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comm..._revealed/   

I'm not saying just because some posters on Reddit said it ....etc., but personally there's enough for me not to use Imgur. I don't criticize others using it, and I never complain if I can't see posted images on the forum. It's ok.
Another factor is that Firefox detects tracking and blocks the images, I don't want to be tracked, as far as possible.

As regards "use something similar" - I don't use cloud sharing and all that, so I'm the last person to ask for advice there. However today's search turned up https://www.theverge.com/2016/5/26/11782...pload-beta  which might be useful. But don't change anything on my account, you've enough to do. I'm happy.

I will type out the partition data line by line and no doubt that'll be enough.

But to start... You're showing Windows vs LL sdx info, so not 100% where on the disk these are arranged (the link above will explain)
The Recovery is only 12GB (sda3?) then a 350mb (prob boot) and 286GB C:

You're best bet... Clean up C: (though you could get by) then in Windows Shrink the volume, and use space from this partition leaving the others alone.
Currently 105gb free = allows for 50 for LL 50 for Windows to grow and +\- 5 for swap as is...

If you dead set on using the recovery you'll still need to Shrink C and use  40gb from it + the 12 from recovery to have the 50 you want..
BUT recovery will need to be at the end of the disk - which it usually is not. If its at the front, I'm not sure you'll be able to rearrange to make use of it, unless you remove it and make use of it for swap.

the reason I've given the Windows info is that's what Jerry asked for.

I'm hoping there'll be a simpler solution - LL is aimed at people like me, ie coming over from Windows, I hope it is possible to increase the Recovery (sd3) using spare "C" space. I have decided to install on that Recovery (sd3) partition.

Last year when I first installed dual boot, on my Dell, the installer (after choosing Something Else) created/offered sd4/ext .  Seems that install option is not the same now, at least not on the HP I'm hoping to use for dual boot.

I'll wait to see if Jerry has a simpler suggestion, I find all that a head-wrecker. Maybe I'm getting old, or too tired, but I can't see why it's harder now than last year.
