Getting rid of the 30s period before sleep
#1
Hi, everybody - new user here. I can't figure out how to get rid of the 30 second countdown that I get when I want to suspend the system. I'm talking about the one I get down in the right end of the menu; the one that comes up when I go through the whisker menu doesn't do this, but it's more clicks. I know I can just click the mouse and bypass it, but I'd like to just click on SUSPEND and have it suspend without any backtalk.  ;D How do I do this?

Thanks!

Nobody? i thought this would be simple.

I'm not on a 18.04 base so let me ask you to try a command and see if this works like how it works on my system. In terminal type: systemctl suspend

If this works as I think it will, we can make a launcher and put it somewhere so all you would have to do is click the icon and it suspends.

Thanks; does that mean that the 30 second setting is not user-configurable? I can get it to go to sleep from the whisker menu, which takes three clicks total but there's no 30 second delay. Going through the user menu on the right side also takes three clicks but they are a bit different, as one of them is for overriding the 30 second delay. I can't suspend my system right now because I'm running Reaper and if I do I will lose the audio when the computer wakes up (requiring a reboot to get it back); I'm working on something I don' t want to disturb at the moment.

I had thought maybe there was a config file somewhere that I could just edit; that's often the case with linux, I know. However, this is my first time really using it as a daily driver, and certainly my first time with Linux Lite. Lubuntu has a simple button on the right side of the menu that is for power management; click it once, then click SUSPEND, and you're done. However, Lubuntu also seems buggy to me, so I went with Linux Lite. so far, I like it.

I'll get on my other stuff that is 18.04 base and look at that more closely. If I am understanding this correctly right clicking on the desktop and using entry that says suspend rather than the logout. I will install in a vm a LL 4 version so I can see exactly what is on the menu that your talking about. This will be this later this evening. I make my own iso's so even using my newer base version it not anything like the LL 4 release. If this is just a menu icon then the right click menu stuff is in a file in the /home/"username"/.config/Thunar/uca.xml and can be configured but let me look at it later to see what your seeing.

I have installed a base LL 4 iso into a vm. I hit suspend which is not good in a vm but it goes immediately. I am looking for where the 30 second timer is as the only place I think it could have been adjusted is in the power manager in the settings. Please tell me the exact steps you used to suspend and where you clicked on the desktop. I am trying not to assume or guess so I can help you figure this out.

I found I think where you are talking about. Did you add the action buttons to the panel? When I did that on a base LL 4 and hit suspend I found the countdown of 30 seconds. There are a couple of ways around this that can be done. First is to just create a launcher, which I have done, and it works immediately when clicked. The second is to create a logout launcher which will show all of your options. Please let me know how you want to approach this and I can walk you through. I use a dock with a shutdown icon which a user can use so they do not need to add the action buttons to the panel.

That is exceptionally helpful, and I thank you. I think the immediate sleep launcher is what I want, since the whisker menu will allow me to shut it down if I need to; this computer is likely to be on almost all the time, but it it will be suspended a lot. I'm so tired right now that I'll have to get back to this tomorrow but this is really great news.

Thanks so much.

Ok here we go. First, right click on the desktop and select create a launcher. Second, name it Suspend. Third, for the command section copy this without the quotes, "systemctl suspend". Fourth, select the no icon and it should open up some icons, at the top select all icons from the drop down list and you can can choose the suspend icon to match things. Hit create. Now you can hit the icon and it should work. The first time you hit the icon it will throw a screen about not trusting and not executable. Hit make executable and that should not appear again, if it does right click on the new icon and go to permissions and check the executable box and that should fix it.

If these instructions do not work please try again and post the results so I can go back into the LL 4 vm and double check everything.

Thanks for the clear directions. I followed them precisely, and now there is a Suspend icon on my desktop, so that should do what I want, although I would rather have had an item in the menu like the one my wife's computer (Lubuntu) uses.

i just tried it, and after getting a notice about it not being an executable and did I want to mark it as an executable (which I did), it worked perfectly.

So I will remove that button from the menu. thanks so much for explaining how to do that - I had been wondering just what a "launcher" was on this OS; I had it figured right, but I kept looking for a way to put icons on the desktop.

I'm really getting to like Linux Lite.
