#1
Now that the Installation has a swap file instead of a swap partition what is the best way to partition for a Manual Install...?.

Isn't there the option to install the new distro alongside your previous one? The installer will do it for you. Or you may choose the option to erase the whole drive and install only this distro. Or you may leave a swap partition, if any, - it shouldn't affect the installation.

Thanks NN but I dont dual boot.

I meant partitioning and installing LL 4.0 manually to a clean drive.

From what I can see it is one ext4 partition on /.

Firstly, your drive is not 'clean' as there are 24,32 GiB allocated for something on your 'clean' drive.

Secondly, from what I can see, your 'clean' hard drive is external, not internal, as it is named sdb, not sda. Do you see the difference (see below)?

I can't imagine how to install a distro on an external HDD without grub on it, as, I think, grub should be written on the internal HDD. Please ask someone else, who can help you, for I can't, sorry.

The screenshot was from Gparted on a auto-installed installation of LL4.0........That drive is working fine.

This thread is about installing Linux Lite 4.0 to a clean drive MANUALLY........Not an Auto install

Sorry, if it's an AUTO install, then why should you do it MANUALLY, I wonder?

In Russian we have a very good saying: "Don't interfere with the working machine!". The context is: otherwise it may stop working at all. But, of course, you can do, as you wish.  8)

Its about learning Linux file systems and Installation protocol.

Oh, I see... Though the amount of information on the Internet is enormous (YouTube reviews, forums and blogs on Linux, online manuals, etc.), one can't learn new things without doing them ('manually') - one can't learn to swim without swimming, one can't learn to ride a bike without riding it, and so on. That is the answer to your question. Don't be afraid to experiment and of possible mistakes, just do it, and you will gain experience, since only 'practice is the criterion of truth'. Good luck in your experimenting!

Tried a Manual install to a 1TB external HDD.

Made 1 partition on ext4 mounted as / and installed.

A flawless install.

Simple as that.

Can mark this as Solved.  Smile
