Problem Upgrading Linux Lite 3.4
#1
I have a laptop that I use very rarely, and I turned it on the other day and attempted to upgrade it.

LL 3.4 went to update, and when I attempted to reboot the system it hung during the boot process.  I used Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get rid of the spash screen, and the messages on the screen were no longer aligned properly (Like the end of line was a vertical tab, and the text just wrapped when it hit the end of the screen (but any characters printed after the end of the line were lost).

The last messages on the screen where (and normal registration returned so messages started at the beginning of the line as expected):
Code:
     Starting Location Lookup Service....
[OK] Started Location Lookup Service.
     Starting Location Lookup Service....
[OK] Started Location Lookup Service.
and the system hung, but did not crash.  I was able to use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get a login prompt and log into the system.  The command [tt]startx[/tt] brought the graphical desktop back.  I did a bit of looking around and found the following in dmesg:
Code:

Any clue how I troubleshoot this and continue my upgrade path to 3.8?  Or do I have to wipe the system and start again?  I don't have a clue what to do next.

Hello mezzmer,

as you state you do not use this laptop very often, if you can remove any of your data ?
A clean install might be a good idea.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not sure exactly what I did that got me through, but I just installed on top of the old installation, and then messed around with [tt]software-properties-gtk[/tt] until I got something that didn't produce any errors.  I'm not sure if I got all right lists.  Where/how can I find documentation on what the right list of PPAs for a default should be?  That doesn't seem like it should be a hard question.

The biggest thing for me is preserving the desktop customizations.  Is there a way I can save and reload them?  Then I can just blow away the whole system and reload the desktop.

There is some info on adding and removing PPA's in the Help manual - https://www.freecinema2022.gq/manual/conte...l#software

This may be useful for the desktop - https://askubuntu.com/questions/148932/h...ne-into-an

Thanks, that's helpful, you answered the next question I was going to ask - how I can see what PPAs I have installed.

The question I was actually asking was where is it documented what PPAs I SHOULD BE USING.  i.e What are the current PPAs, and when a version goes from 3.4 to 3.6 or 3.8, how do the PPAs change?  Any insight on that?  I've had several linux installs go bad when the repos just decided to go away, and I had no idea what to do to replace them.

The staff/developers will know this answer, as to what is pre-installed in LL.
I have added softwares/changed so it is not useful if I check.

The fewer the PPAs the better!  Rule of thumb...

^This.

But if you insist on using PPA's, then ask here on the Forums first before adding one.

Sorry to ramble a bit, but I still didn't get the answer I was asking for.  I've included a bit of feedback on my experience with 3.8 so far, and a bit more context as to why I'm asking the question that I'm asking and they type of information that I think should be readily available for troubleshooting.

Thanks everyone for the replies, and I do get "the fewer PPAs the better!"  I would have loved to be able to live without any PPAs.  I would have likely been OK with a slightly older version of WS to avoid the PPA-they scare me because they have a nasty habit of disappearing (and of course they could introduce incompatible libraries as well).

It was a awhile back, but I was able to install Wireshark on either 3.2 or 3.4 (can't remember), so I was really surprised I couldn't install under 3.8.  I had a great experience with 3.2/3.4, but even a new 3.8 install was less than wonderful - somehow I ended up with a very stock xfce install that took a lot of work to get looking nice-not very intuitive to set up, but with the help of Google, I figured it out, but if I was someone new to Linux coming from Windows, it would have totally put me off linux.  I don't know why this happened, if I did something wrong or if the quality control on 3.8 was a bit lacking.  Having said this, I was just successful in upgrading an old v3.2 virtual machine all the way to v3.8, and it seemed to go flawlessly (Other than desktop configuration, there were no packages installed.  The installs that failed all had Wireshark installed (but not with a PPA, so I'm wondering if that was the cause.)

Now that it's working, I'm very impressed with how lite it is - under 300M and 3%< CPU on an ancient (2006) single core Turion.

Reason I ask the question about "Knowing what should be happening with PPAs is that I have been experiencing problems with "missing PPAs" using a default install.  I started using LL casually with 3.2, and then upgraded to 3.4... no problem.  Then I didn't get around to upgrading for awhile, and the upgrade from 3.4 to 3.8 was a nightmare.  One thing that was happening was missing PPAs (and none of the missing PPAs were ones that I added - they were all created by the installer).  This is why I was asking what PPAs should still exist, and if a PPA goes away what should be done to replace it.  This is something that should be easy to find on the website.

After a brand new install of 3.8, I ended up with the following error:

Err:5 http://repo.linuxliteos.com/linuxlite xenial/main amd64 Packages
  404  Not Found

when I attempted to do a [tt]sudo apt-get update[/tt].  (I've included the complete transcript below to provide context.)  Other than running systembak to save the system, the commands shown in the transcript were the very first commands executed on the fresh v3.8 install.

Since this was a brand new install, I made the assumption that the repo should exist, and I changed the Linux Lite repository mirror  to:
http://mirror.unlockforus.com/linuxlite/
from the default set by the installer, and the error disappeared.  I don't know if this solved the problem completely, or if it just cleared the error.  If this were an older say 3.4 or 3.6 install, I wouldn't know what to do - has the repo disappeared because the version is no longer supported or what?  It would be very helpful if the website provided guidance about repos and different versions and what to do about upgrades.  When a repo that was part of the default install disappears it can cause a newer user a lot of grief.

Any constructive suggestions/comments/feedback is much appreciated.

Any constructive suggestions/comments/feedback is much appreciated.

Hello mezzmer,

there is already a tutorial in the Linux Lite Manual here -
https://www.freecinema2022.gq/manual/softw...#literepos

and info plus mirrors here - https://www.freecinema2022.gq/mirrors.php
^ use this link for the correct URL's to the mirrors.
The one you stated as used to Ralphy's mirror is an incomplete URL, there are instructions on the mirror link, it is important because a future member/s may copy/paste this, instead of looking at the official/correct URL's on the mirror link for the instructions.
That can have potential to further extend issues per number of users asking related questions etc.
