Format new drive with GParted ext4 Error
#1
Hi all

I used Linux on and off for some years never really got my head round it so been dipping my toe back in with Linux Lite. Did use Mint for a bit but had driver problems.

Anyway to my question
So now I install new drive trying to format with GParted ext4 but get an error I make new drive a new partition table bsd that works then try as above ext4.

Drive size 160gb I did a search and see it's not a drive size problem ext4 goes up to TB.

Screen shot of error any help welcome

Then Gparted:
I have never seen this.

Are you root?

Maybe try first 150 gig. Choose ext4, perhaps bootflag on? (And don't forget 'swap' when this works and you try a final setup.)

I've never used a BSD partition table, but have suspicion that is causing the problem.  Ext4 file system may not work on a BSD disk.  Any particular reason you chose a BSD partition table instead of standard MSDOS?

If you don't have to use BSD, just start over and make the partition table MSDOS instead.  You shouldn't have any problems once you do that.

Thanks rijnsma I was using the Attachments and other options bottom of page.  :-[
And Thanks gold_finger That worked I did think the MSDOS would be for Win OS as MS =  Microsoft.

I can't drag files on to drive I think it's a permissions thing! My next step is to have a Google.
I did get couple files on drive when I open drive, bottom screen shot but don't know how I did that was a bit of clicking about.

I'm not clear on what you are using the drive for.  Are you trying to install to it?  Or is this just an added drive for more storage space?

If trying to install LL on it, see here:  https://www.freecinema2022.gq/manual/install.html.

If trying to use as extra storage space for an already installed system, see if this page gives you some ideas for setting it up:  https://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/index...opic=203.0.

Ok -- if just a data partition, then likely just a permissions problem.  Info in the second link I referenced should let you solve problem.  If you need any help, or if something unclear, post back.

:-[ It's been a few more days and I'm still struggling still.
I rebuilt hoping setup would see drive and formate and set the permissions.

Someone I know said about typing chown in Terminal but I got lost and after reboot old permissions rebooted.

Why Linux so complicated!

Mostly things like these are simple.
But there can be circumstances which make that one has to investigate.
Why change owner? (chown)
Maybe start all over again?  Smile I have done that more than once. Never give up.
