Need info on the "Preload Apps" option in Lite Tweaks
#1
I've attempted to preload SeaMonkey via the "Preload Apps" option in Tweaks 3 or 4 times now. Seems it doesn't want to work exactly right. What I have now is a situation where it only loads maybe every 10th or 12th time, and loads very late. I almost always already have a version open by the time it suddenly appears.

What I need to now is how to undo the preload. Is there a file I can edit to remove it completely?

Hmmm. I read that over a couple of times, Jerry. It seemed that part of the problem might have been that I have no "preload.conf" or "preload.log" files on my PC. So I checked in Synaptic for the "preload" package and it's not even installed. Guess that might explain why I'm having problems.

So "preload" isn't installed by default, but in "Lite Tweaks", "Preload Apps" is an option? How's that work?

Use Lite Tweaks to install Preload.

Have a look here for a more detailed explanation - https://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/on-to.../#msg28039 (scroll down to Lite Tweaks - Preload Apps)

OK. I read that over. I was actually looking for a way to stop preload and remove it. I guess since Synaptic shows it isn't installed I'm at that point already. Now I'm wondering what is happening every once in a while when a second instance of SeaMonkey suddenly loads by itself. I'll have to try and watch the conditions under which it happens a little closer.

Get in touch with the SeaMonkey people and see if it's known to happen.

You may want to check what SeaMonkey version you are using. It doesn't seem preload to be the issue on my end. To uninstall preload, open Lite Tweaks, select "Preload Apps" and click Begin... there is an option within it to remove it.

preload is a readahead daemon (a service) that monitors and keeps a history of the user’s most frequently used applications and the files that those applications load on execution. Then based on that data, it guesses what applications the user will likely use in the near future and (partially) loads them from the hard drive to the system page cache (before they’re requested). In short, once preload is installed, after creating its database to better estimate its predictions, your frequently used applications will launch faster.

Keep in mind though, preload is not a “set and go” daemon. You won’t immediately notice applications launching faster and as mentioned before, for speeding up apps start-up times, preload needs to build its database by monitoring the runtime of applications (ignoring anything that runs under 20 seconds) and its memory usage, thus calculating the importance of an application.

Sorry for seeming stupid and preferring Linux - I just don't know any better.

Showing that video is just going to confuse him. It would be better to demonstrate from the actual software that we provide, not forked versions with different information. Cheers.

Ralphy, I have to assume that Preload isn't installed on my laptop since I checked in Synaptic and it shows it isn't installed. I've searched my file system and there are no files with the word "preload" in them anywhere on my laptop.

As for version of SeaMonkey, I'm running 2.48, which to the best of my knowledge is the latest release.

About 2 months ago, I attempted to install Preload Apps via Lite Tweaks. I received an error the first 2 or 3 times I set it up. I don't recall the exact error, but I do recall that it basically stated that preload had not been successfully installed, so ran it one more time and it DID seem to come to a normal conclusion. I waited 6 weeks or so for everything to work, but never did get SeaMonkey to Preload for me. Then after posting on here and getting a couple of things to read from Jerry I found that Preload wasn't even installed.

At this point I'm calling this resolved since I know Preload is NOT installed and that's what I initially wanted to accomplish with this thread. The first screenshot below shows 'preload' not installed in Synaptic. The second screenshot is the result of a files search for "preload".
