Default browser
#1
I have both the Firefox and Vivaldi browsers installed.
I mostly use the Vivaldi browser.

Every time I start the Vivaldi browser, it says that
Vivaldi is not the default browser and I click the
'Set as Default' button to make it the default.

If I close Vivaldi and restart it, again it is not the
default browser. When I close Vivaldi and start
lite tweaks to set the default browser, lite tweaks
shows Vivaldi is already the default browser.

If I close Vivaldi after making it the default
browser, and then start Firefox, Firefox's
settings shows that Firefox is the default browser.

This does not happen in another pc using
Linux Mint 18.1 xfce, so there must be something
in Linux Lite that is causing the default browser
to revert back to Firefox after closing Vivaldi.

Anyone have any idea ?

This is a suggestion that might work for you. I use Pale Moon as my default browser & this worked for me. In Linux Lite, Firefox is the default browser. Go to Synaptic & search for Firefox. Right click & select to completely remove (1) Firefox, (2) the English language plugin, & (3) the Ubuntu Firefox plugin. You'll notice if you scroll down the list there are 3 boxes filled in for Firefox. After you uninstall restart your machine, go to lite tweaks & make sure Vivaldi is listed as your default browser. The good thing is if doesn't work for you, and you actually like Firefox, you can always reinstall it in Synaptic. Everytime I do a fresh install of Linux Lite, getting rid of Firefox is one of the first things I do. I find it slow, resource heavy, and almost impossible to get rid of all the built-in bloatware it comes with. (boy I'm not prejudice about Firefox, am I? - - - Yes, yes I am. I can't stand it)

Suggestion:

1- Close all browsers
2- Launch Lite Tweaks and set Firefox as default browser (even if it is set already)
3- Set Vivaldi as default browser using Lite Tweaks once again.

What Vivaldo version are you running? I'm on Vivaldi 1.7.735.46 (Stable channel) (64-bit) and I cannot replicate the issue here.

Perhaps it has to do with the options in Vivaldi and Firefox browsers (settings) . I noticed that Vivaldi does not recognize itself as the default browser even though it is properly set by Lite Tweaks... Using Lite Tweaks my default browser is set to Vivaldi and all links including the Help Manual in Linux Lite are opened with Vivaldi (set as default browser with Lite Tweaks). Preferred applications also shows the correct set browser after Lite Tweaks (Vivaldi).

I wonder how browsers are checking whether they are the default browser or not in Linux Lite. Maybe we can add a hint somewhere with Lite Tweaks to help it?

I followed your advice above; still no joy.
Don't have this problem in either linux mint 18.1 xfce or xubuntu,
which makes me think it is something in Linux Lite.

Can someone else running Linux Lite 3.4 BETA install an additional browser supported in Lite Tweaks and try to duplicate the issue reported by jim217 please? I cannot replicate the issue at all.

Lite Tweaks recognizes and can set as default the following browsers:

Firefox, Chromium, Google Chrome, Midori, Pale Moon and Vivaldi (Stable)

What to test?

  1. Install an additional browser (any of the above mentioned)
  2. Using Lite Tweaks set your default browser to Firefox.
  3. Using Lite Tweaks set your default browser to the second installed browser.
  4. Open URL links or Lite Help Manual from the WhiskerMenu or web links from the Lite Welcome Screen and verify that they open with the browser set as default by Lite Tweaks.
  5. Open "Preferred Applications"  and verify that the default browser matches the one set by Lite Tweaks.

Had a browse through the Help Manual on Vivaldi.

Found it to be sharp and very snappy.

Must explore this Browser further, never used it before.

Looking very good.  Smile
