how can i change options so i can see what folder i am in like /root without having to go to "choose folder", i prefer when it shows where i'm browsing and i been messing with settings and must have turned this off somewhere and not cannot find? sorry for another newb question just annoying the heck outa me. i also cannot open certain folders by left clicking an "open as admin" like programs, is their a way i can give permission to get into all folders i get crashes when using software that tries to access them and believe it may be a issue with some vm i try running...

i see where i can change it in thunar but it doesnt apply to every folder after changing from tool bar

I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about here.  Can you describe process you are trying and in what program.  I can't tell whether you are talking about using the file manager or something else.

Can you be more specific.  What 'software' are you trying to manually give root access to folders for and why?  Are you just trying to browse around the file system, or are you trying to change permissions on things for some reason?  What software is crashing and what are you in the middle of doing (or trying to do) when that happens?

hi sorry for not explaining better. when i open my home folder i see button that lead me to [home][folder] when i would like it to be more like windows or when i "choose the folder" on the gear icon all the way to the left it leaves me with a windows opening bar that i am more confortable with like /root/home whereas i can just type where i want to do and not use the icons like in windows. i believe i had this setup before but can't find a way to switch it back and find it incredibly annoying. it changes only when in thunar than when going to any other folder outside it switches back to the button icons showing what folders i am in.

hope you can help and if i can explain it better let me know i can try a lot harder but think this sums up the issues, im just way in favor of the windows type folder prompt were i can physically type what fold i want to go to /root/home/blah/blah instead of the [buttom] [botton]...

also like mentioned when in thunar i can set the option to allow me to see the folders /root/user/home by going to "view>location selector>tool bar style" and i remember maybe it was linux 1.0 but it allowed me to keep this setting on all folders which made it a lot easier for me to browse around i really dislike and am not getting used to the button setup over it. hope this helps explain. i used to be able to left click and "open termninal" and have a lot of settings that i can only use when i open thunar now which i really liked. the entire folder features seems to have been dumbed down on me?

thanks hope i explained things a little better, its all a bit confusing coming from xp so i hope im not wasting your time. basically i want to have all the same compact view/open terminal/non button browsing i get when i open any folder as i do with thunar. if that would be possible it would make my browsing around places way less complicated and easier to launch terminal in folders just by left clocking like i used to.

hi, first thanks so for much for the responses guys. unfortunately this only fixes the problem when running thunar, when i save the setting to this everything is exactly how i want it, but only in thunar. i want all folders to act just like thunar does, even how it lists files. it seems that when i change setting in thunar it only effects the setting their and not when i close it and open a new folder. is that not normal? would hate to format i just spent weeks getting everything set up perfect... did i mess something up? i don't know exactly when this switched like this but all i've been doing lately was playing with virtualbox? i don't think this should have effected folder settings not saving...

thunar runs exactly how i would like all my folders to look. the compact lists, the options given when left clicking, the folder toolbar, everything is perfect, it just doesn't change other folders when i close it out. i really get annoyed by the settings layout when not in thunar and makes things hard to work  with. i tried running sudo thunar and changing, everything sticks and stays right with it but again only while in thunar. every other folder the settings are all off and frustrating to work in.

Can you post a screenshot showing an example of what other folders you mean and/or showing somewhere that you try clicking to have it act/look as you describe.  I thought solution posted by Scott(0) was what you were looking for, so now I'm not sure what other folder views you mean.

eh i should have waited for the minute it took you to respond, i since made things much worse im afriad. i uninstalled nautilus thinking this was the culprit, i forgot it was installed and when i ran Nautilus it loaded thunar anyway, so i forgot it was installed (or is it by default?). so now when i go to preferred application or try to choose a folder to open, i can see Thunar in the list, but it does not allow me to choose it. so i cant open folders now. i'm an idiot. i tried reinstalling thunar and its other addons in add software and it shows up still, but i can still not pick it as a defaultoh boy...

the folders did look like when you choose to see files in a list, where you can only choose one file at a time and each in its own bar. and instead of where you can change directories on the top i have buttons and to choose from [home][username] but i'm afraid i made things worse, seconds after you responded no less. god a feel stupid sorry.. maybe their is a way i can make it default in the terminal, because i can still run it.

FIXED THANKS ALL

ran SUDO exo-preferred-applications,and permission was allowed to change. and now the folders are running exactly how they were set too. so happy love this os, thanks to all you guys. !

lesson in all this, if your new to linux don't jump in too deep installing stuff and thinking it will not effect the system even though it loaded thunar whenever i ran nautilus which made me forget it was even installed. i have a lot to learn this is my first linux distro, but shockingly loved it better than windows the second i ran it.
