file sharing and rdp via smb and remmina in LL3.0 & Windows10
#1
Some good news. I accidentally discovered (while tinkering with Thunar dependencies today) that Windows10 home has apparently added the missing support for file sharing and remote desktop. I discovered today running troubleshooter while setting up an ad hoc network on the W10 OS. I had it all briefly working (about a half an hour or so) with a LL3.0 box on the other end through my wifi router. I was able to configure it all using the help manual file sharing conventions on the LL end, but the Windows instructions in the help manual don't really apply to the redundancy in Windows10. I used the GUI entirely on both machines, as I like to test these things for user friendliness, and Remmina worked briefly. I'm sure that the little woman and her grandson have some of the grouping permissions messed up on the Windows10 box, and that's why settings were discarded from Windows10 after reboot of both boxes even though I made the changes as administrator. I am pretty optimistic that file sharing and remote desktop will work on Windows10 home, and not just pro, now though. A tutorial will have to be specific about Win10 redundancy issues, and group usages. Once I narrow it all down a bit more I'll come up with something simple. It does work though. Also note that Samba is a bit messed up, and I had to change a few things, and I'm not satisfied with the security conventions yet, but a half hour is a half hour. Yippee Skippee. Dinner time. I quit.

Okay. All is well with the LL end. Follow the help manual exactly concerning configuring LL for sharing, with the following exceptions for use with Windows10 home.
1) workgroup should = HomeGroup
2)You must set up a HomeGroup in windows10 Home.
3)If you join the HomeGroup with an administrator account from the windows machine, it gives you administrative access to all accessible files on the windows10 computer, depending on the editors and software you have installed in LL When prompted for user from LL share, login with that account and password.
4)Make Homegroup a private network in Windows10. In advanced sharing settings open the private dialogue and allow sharing. You can disable Windows firewall for the private network if all private network users are trusted. Logins and passwords will still be expected.
5)If sharing doesn't work immediately, it may take quite a while for windows to locate and update the necessary (hours for some) files to run smbshare, as it does not come properly packaged in the original home edition of windows10. Leave both computers on and BE PATIENT. I started the process around midnight last night, and went to bed. Time stamps in windows updates show the last of the config at about two in the morning.
6)Make sure the bandwidth limiter is turned off in the pay for Internet dialogue in Windows10 home, or it could take a lot longer.
7)Most of the changes took effect immediately for me in LL, and I could access the windows files once the group situation was corrected. The windows end took a lot longer.
8)Finally if you have not done so already, install Libreoffice for windows to your windows10 home machine. This eases many file compatibility issues once you change "open with application" preferences on the windows desktop to appropriate Libreoffice apps.
9)Most of this is GUI work, with only a few simple terminal commands initially. You may have to run troubleshooter on HomeGroup for windows to find what it needs to download, depending on how updated your Windows10 home is. PATIENCE is an ironically necessary thing with MS, considering the thrust of their public philosophy is to provide clickers with instant gratification.
10)You may have a problem with clock syncing in windows. Linux gives you a five minute leeway, but windows10 home gives you nothing.

Thanks for sharing this TC, a valuable resource. It looks like our Sharing section will require some updating, do you mind if I use your findings as a guide?

Whatever you can use. I'm going to tinker some more today. Maybe simplify the process even more. My notes got a little disjointed. I'll work on Remmina and RDP later on today.

Also it's been my experience with the home editions, that if you installed Windows10 home as an upgrade from Windows7 file sharing worked just fine. The problems with Windows10 home are all with new installs, both download and DVD, though that may have changed now. Most video tutorials I've seen do not take this into consideration.

Remmina works beautifully in LL with the windows10 home desktop. Displays it accurately and functionally.

1)Did have to download and install rdp wrapper on the windows10 box - https://github.com/stascorp/rdpwrap/releases
2)Windows does not display LL correctly yet, but I am working on the libreoffice thing.
3)Make sure to choose client custom screen resolution smaller than your LL desktop or will not display.
4)Make sure to enable client inherited keyboard config.
5)To be safe disable audio on windows10 on your first attempt. Linux is buggy with audio and it can cause non loading.
6)Libreoffice can be run in the windows desktop remotely from LL, and in LL at the same time.
7)Disable tray icon and startup actions. I use four desktops, and just like nitroshare remmina will put four instances in the system tray if you don't disable it.

Also worth adding for new users, bit length doesn't matter in rdp. You can access 64bit desktops from 32bit boxes and vice versa because it is just a modified server/client/ convention.
