How to run Linux Lite completely in a Ramdisk
#1
I searched the forums for even similar topics without success. And before anyone asks, yes I do know what running an OS in ramdisk does as I did it with XP and loved it for a great many of years. All's I can say is there is absolutely no cleaning needed after each boot up.  ;D Another plus is I can try out a pile of softwares, scripts ect. linux offers with ease and never have to uninstall anything or worry about distroying the OS.

So anyway on with the topic at hand, does anyone know how to accomplish this with linux?

I do know I installed firadisk, imaged xp into a compressed raw .img file for faster load time and booted it with grub4dos. Since I am new to linux then I am unsure what programs or processes are needed to do this with Linux Lite.

Any help here would be tremendously appreciated!

Haven't tried that myself, so can't give instructions.  However, if you plug "ramdisk" and/or "tmpfs" into the search engine in my signature line you'll get several hits.  Filter answers for "Ubuntu" and/or "Mint" (by clicking on their names along the top of results page) and you'll find ones that should apply in same manner to LL.
Try Linux Beginner Search Engine for answers to Linux questions.

Hi chke419,

I have managed to boot up Linux Lite (haven't tried 2.8 yet though) on an USB stick/ a portable hard disk.
However, not via my preferred method to boot up directly from the ISO file via an entry in my bootloader config file.
It involves unpacking two directories from the ISO file. Furthermore, it's not possible to unplug the USB device.

If this is something you are after and need more info, let me know Smile

Well I went back to the forum where I learned to put XP in a ramdisk and luckily enough I found what I was looking for. Those people at reboot.pro are allot smarter then I could ever claim to be that is for certain. Knowing the tools and figuring out the processes will be the kicker. Does the "dd" command create a disk image in linux?
