Main page - High CPU
#1
I've checked with our host, the main page of the Forums is causing high cpu on our web server. I need to get to the bottom of this issue and sort it out. Some of you may have experienced the '508 Resource Usage is high' message when loading the Forums.

The first suspect is the News block. This has been disabled for now and we'll see if that is one of the factors. Other features on the main page may be disabled in the course of troubleshooting and finding that exact culprit.

I've been getting a live scrolling popup in the upper right lately, which claims that replies have been posted to my own posts. Every time I've checked it out though, they are simply replies to threads I have contributed to, and have nothing to do with my posts specifically. And the scroller is so short-lived that it's almost impossible to use it anyway. But the most relevant point is that this popup acts very jagged, like it's struggling to manifest. Not sure if this is a cause or effect of the root problem. I run the default theme.

I've gotten this a couple times over the past couple weeks...
I haven't noticed as much during the day say 11a-1p (EST) on a Windows system.
May be more heavily accessed in the evening??...

Let me know if I can add any other info...
Hope it helps..

@firenice03 thank you for that Smile

My host's current stance is that it is most likely to be traffic related. I am also removing plugins that can contribute to more resource use. Looks like we may be outgrowing the host once again. I'm just weary of upgrading because they may be purposely limiting me to force me to spend more. Hence the cautious, methodical approach. If we move to a VPS or dedicated we are looking at a substantial increase in monthly costs, something that is currently out of reach financially.

CPU usage has dropped 30% on average lately. Hopefully this is the end of such spikes.

It seems to me that high cpu usage could be caused if you have a lot of people subscribing to the RSS feed or if there are many email notifications being sent.  Just something to think about.

Update: CPU usage is now consistently flat at 0% huge improvement! So now we'll run as we are. Have you guys noticed any improvement in performance, load times etc?

Not sure if it was ditching that script popup, but that was when the front page began loading smoothly here.
