[Solved] Chromium browser crashes system
#1
Hi guys,

I've had a fairly serious problem here for a couple of weeks. I use the Slimjet browser, which is built on Chromium. SJ usually runs a bit behind the latest Chromium release so that the author can make sure there are no conflicts with his additions to the core. This was exacerbated due to the "OK google" mess, in which google added the ability to listen to the user without telling him. That caused SJ to hold off on updating the core for several weeks until recently.

So I was fine on SJ 4.15 for a long time. But when v 5 just came out, it totally took down my LL 2.6 x64 system. I could move the mouse pointer, but nothing worked.  It would hang the GPU, especially when I tried to access certain menu functions, such as Settings or More Tools. Eventually the system would go into text mode and then crash (see pic).

I tried three different v 5 releases, and all did the same thing, though uptime went from 30 seconds to maybe 5 minutes. Uninstalling the older SJ version did not help.

I began to think my SJ profile was corrupted, so created a new one. Didn't help.

Finally I installed Chromium from the Synaptics PM. I thought the problem was solved until half an hour ago. When I went to access a text size drop-down menu in a composition box, it manifested in total black - the sign that the GPU was locking up. Surprisingly the system was able to recover from that, possibly because the menu was small. But this told me that the problem is not simply Slimjet, it is with Chromium as well.

Does anyone have any clue what is going on and what might be done about it? There are a lot of useful features in SJ that I would not like to lose. And now I'm walking on eggshells even with Chromium.

Thanks!

Did you create a restore point using Systemback?  If so, revert to that.

Newtus, I kiss you on the cheek! Wink After I turned off hardware acceleration I haven't seen the problem yet. All the drop-down menus are manifesting correctly. I think the problem is solved. I still get browser crashes at times when I upload pictures to ebay, but they are only browser crashes, which I can handle. It's unfortunate to have to turn off acceleration, but nonetheless I think this problem is solved! Thank you for posting that. I really should have thought of this myself.

Torreydale - yes, I take regular Restore Points. I also took two system images using different programs, one of them with a validation function. I do NOT want to get caught flatfooted! Smile Thanks.
