Can't connect to windows server PPTP VPN
#1
We have a simple windows server 8 vpn at the office.  I can easily connect to it with my macbook air, a windows laptop, my iphone and ipad.  For some reason, I can't get a connection from linux.  I tried with Ubuntu and OpenSuse, I now switched to Linux Lite.  I never was able to connect to my windows vpn from a linux station.  Why is that so?

With Linux Lite, it just doesn't connect.  It doesn't give me an error message or anything.  How do I connect to a windows VPN?

Hi,

I think it will be difficult to say without knowing what you have done already.??
Otherwise people may just keep suggesting things that you may have already done....
I have no need for this any more,
but well over a year ago, just out of curiosity I tried and connected to our VPN,
not sure what it was, Windows or Cisco.?
In my notes I had this, which I found by Googling:

Click the NetworkManager Icon in System Tray
VPN Connection -> Configure VPN -> <VPN> -> Add
Choose <Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)> -> Create
Fill out those neccessary informations and click Advanced
In Authentication section, CANCEL <PAP>, <CHAP>, and <EAP>, KEEP ONLY <MSCHAP> and <MSCHAPv2> SELECTED.
In Security and Compression section, SELECT <Use Point-to-Point encryption (MPPE)>, and choose Security to be <All Available (Default)>
OK -> Accept -> Close
Reboot or Re-start networking
Now click the NetworkManager Icon
Click VPN Connection and click the profile you created.
Wait for few seconds till it get connected.

It should work, just like the others (MAC etc)
Best bet would be to try to mirror the working systems configurations..
  • Gateway - sometime needs to be qualified - gateway.work.com
  • Make sure using correct authentication methods - uncheck the others
  • Fully qualify the domain ie, work.com or sub.work.com
  • May want to try user name as "domain/userid" = you can leave blank it will prompt upon connection
You say that it doesn't connect but no errors? Are you sure that its not connected? Try accessing an internal resource, intranet site or something...

Connected to my VPN this evening....
A successful connection will put a lock on the wireless icon (probably similar for ethernet) but it could go unnoticed...

Here's a picture of my config.  When I try to connect, it ask me for my VPN Password and after a few second trying to connect, the network icon goes back to normal.  I'm obviously not connected.  My Network Connections says that my "last used" connection for the VPN is "never".  I rebooted the computer to make sure my change to VPN connection were active.  I don't know what to do from here.

uh! Can't find how to add an image in here, sorry.  No picture of my config.  But, the Gateway is a fixed IP adress.  I have the username and password is at "Always ASK".  In Authentication, PAP, CHAP and EAP are not checked,  MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2 are.
MPPE is checked, security is at All Available, then I checked only Allow Deflate Data Comp and Send PPP Echo.

Finally made it work.  Looks like a bug to me.  I added my pw and saved it.  I did that so that I won't have to enter my pw everytime I test the VPN but it started working then.

Thank you

Not sure why saving a password would of made the difference... I can leave mine blank, but I'm not PPTP...
Glad to hear you got it working...

I am also having a problem connecting to VPN by PPTP.
I have a dual boot with Windows7 and the same details (password /user-id /address) work on Windows but not on Lite.
They also work on another computer which has Xubuntu on it.
Is there anything in Lite which could explain this failure to connect?
