[Solved] Fresh update to LL 2.4 will not "Install Updates"
#1
Hi group,

I have been successfully upgrading a number of machine from LL 2.2 to 2.4 with the instructions in the new release announcement. My daughter's computer was one such machine that appeared to upgrade fine. However, when I try to run "Install Updates", it errors out with "couldn't fetch the package cache information lists."

Any ideas how to fix this and get it back to updating correctly?

Thanks

Hello kjacobs, try to update package information lists manualy. That will produce an error message which will tell us what is wrong.
Press Ctrl+Alt+T and type next into terminal window.
Code:
sudo apt-get update

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the late response........I discovered there was a software source that was failing to update. I then refreshed the software sources and manually ran the update. From there everything worked fine and Install Updates is working again.

I had the same problem with the same error message as kjacobs and tried to update manually and received the following error message...

Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/repo.steampowered.com_steam_dists_precise_steam_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Sorry, I just found this reply and was trying to remember how I did the update. (It has been a busy summer). I believe I had to uncheck the respository in software sources that was causing the update to fail.....then did:

sudo apt-get update

I believe from there it worked fine.
