Hi gibbo, welcome to the forum.  You're right - LL doesn't tell you when updates are available.

In regard to this I'm still trying to find an answer to my question posted earlier in another thread (https://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/index...1#msg13081)

Does anyone know whether Synaptic's update notification (-> Settings -> Repositories -> Updates) is actually working respectively why not? It would at least cover security updates. Also don't know why "When there are other updates" options are deactivated.

Recommended way is to run "Install Updates" in the Menu.  There's no auto-notification of when updates are available.  It's up to your own discretion how often to check for updates.  Some people do it every day, others less frequently.  I usually do it every 2-4 weeks, but that's just me.  Most people probably update more often than me.  If you don't want to bother with it every day, then just get into the habit of doing it once a week.

As far as I know that works.  You just hit "Mark all upgrades" to find them.  BUT it's not recommended doing updates through Synaptic because it will pull-in more items than standard "Install Updates" method -- some of which could cause issues (eg. it will pull in new kernels, which may or may not break something).

Don't know what you are referring to with "When there are other updates" option being deactivated.  I don't see that anywhere, so can you provide a screenshot of where you found that?

Hi gold_finger,

Thanks for you input. Highly appreciated as always!

I actually was not referring to the "Mark all updates" feature which would be just a(nother) manual process anyway.

I was referring to is this setting tap within Synaptic:

1. "Display immediately" - Is that only within Synaptic or is there a system notification to pop up? I would expect "Automatically check for updates" to be a background process that runs without Synaptic being manually opened?

2. "When there are other updates" - no option available

All rather wild guesses as I'm not using Synaptic. I usually work with aptitude (preferred) or apt-get.
Nevertheless it would be very handy to get a notification/ reminder if updates are available. Especially for people who just want to use the system. Sure I can set up cron jobs or even make use of apticron, cron-apt, Pain in the APT etc. But that's a bit much to ask from people switching to Linux/LL.

Hello!

It would be nice to have it automatically check for updates at startup, but only if there's a way to disable it automatically downloading and installing them. Sometimes I just like to get on, do a thing or two, then log out, and not have it wrest control from me to do a gaggle of updates...

Ok, I see what you're talking about now.

However, I really don't know what those options are supposed to do in Synaptic.  I've never paid much attention to them before.  The "Display immediately" one is kind of a mystery to me (mine has that set by default too), because I've never noticed Synaptic telling me that updates were available, even when hitting the "Reload" button before using it.  Since every distro I've used has always had a different standard way to load updates, I've never bothered investigating  the update function in Synaptic beyond the basic "Mark all upgrades" to pull them in.  Maybe someone else here already knows the particulars of that.  I don't have time to delve into it myself right now.  I'll jot this down on my list of things to check out and report back here in the future if I find some revelation that clears this up.  (It's not high on my "todo" list, so don't hold your breath -- it could be a while.)

Thanks for your input!
We are in the same boat in regard to time and priority Smile
I was trying to find a solution for the OP. And of course also for the people I install LL for so that my maintenance effort can go down and I don't need to remind them/ chase them up.
LL on a great way, gets better with each single release. Of course there are plenty of chances to make it even better Smile

Thanks
