Jerry & minesheep. thanks for your help--minesheep--I WILL try your way soon, but Jerry's link worked fine.

I'm marking this solved. The link Jerry provided worked perfectly--I followed it and it installed, had persistence, AND most importantly it installed updates with NO problems.
The only hiccup was in a line at the start:  sudo apt install --install-recommends mkusb mkusb-nox usb-pack-efi  I removed the " --install-recommends" and it all worked then.
The updates had 413 gets from numerous locations. When I installed mksub it also had some quite a few gets and I 1 point it told me to use autoremove to remove some. after that is was all downhill Smile

After the updates my df -h is:

Now that everything is ok, it's important to keep your system clean on a regular basis because you are using a USB with limited space. Run Lite Tweaks and clean everything out at the very least once a week, including older unused kernels.
