GIMP is another reason why I'm glad I made the move to GNU/Linux and Linux Lite.
Prior to this I'd only ever used MS Paint. Nothing else.
At first it felt overwhelming but I decided to stick with it. After learning just a few basics it actually made things easier, saving time and effort, whilst increasing my output ability.
Therefore, my vote is to keep GIMP as the default.
Maybe Pinta could be added to the "Install Additional Software" list as an "open-source, cross-platfrom alternative to Paint.NET"?
