Software suggestion - thumbnail preview
#6
Side note on this subject.

A test machine with Beta LL 2.2 showed thumbnails for picture files, but not movie files.

I installed "restricted extras" (Menu -> Install Additional Software) to test machine and now thumbnails for movies do show up.  I don't know which of the packages from restricted extras controls that, but one of them fixed it.

Appears that if one has installed restricted extras they don't need the tumbler-plugins-extras package.

I have tested it on both arch and xubuntu. I am currently testing it on 2.2 but I believe it may cause major issues for 32 bit and systems with less than 2 gig of ram. As it builds thumb nails in the background it uses 3% of the ram available. It slows down start times of Thunar upon reboot with loss of start up by about 40%. I have tested it on acer Travelmate 4220 with 1.7 ghz 32bit core duo with 2 gig ram.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I'm going to replace Beta 2.2 with Final 2.2 on test system this weekend.  Will use tumbler-plugins-extras package instead of ubuntu-restricted-extras and see how it affects the system.  Test system is an old P4 (vintage 2002) with only 512MB of RAM, so if tumbler causes problems it should be quickly apparent on that machine.  Will post back with results of test.
