1. Notification/message that the drive is almost too full to boot/work.
2. The option to turn this notification off.

This is a very unusual request.
Any Linux has a simple way to check the state of the drives:
In a Terminal, type:

Code:
df -h

On my machine, it looks like that:

Code:
 serban  ~  df -h
Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
tmpfs           1,6G  3,1M  1,6G   1% /run
/dev/sda2        31G   16G   14G  53% /
tmpfs           7,8G  198M  7,6G   3% /dev/shm
tmpfs           5,0M  4,0K  5,0M   1% /run/lock
tmpfs           7,8G     0  7,8G   0% /run/qemu
/dev/sda5       9,8G  1,6G  7,7G  17% /proiecte
/dev/sda6       288G  152G  121G  56% /video
/dev/sda1       511M  7,0M  504M   2% /boot/efi
/dev/sda3        59G  6,3G   50G  12% /home
tmpfs           1,6G   80K  1,6G   1% /run/user/1000

Everybody who uses a computer should know how much space is still available.
Can you check the above and then post back the result?

Best regards, Șerban
