At the GUI login instead of entering password press three keys together - CTRL and ALT and F2.
This should switch to a non GUI terminal style login.
At the 'machinename login:' prompt type normal username (this will be echoed) followed by return.
At the 'Password:' prompt type normal password (won't be echoed) followed by return.
Failure to log in to the terminal means something is wrong with login credentials, but it may give a clue.
Successful log in to the terminal proves the credentials are valid and you can run diagnostic commands from the terminal.
