Thunar; can't list files by filetype or date order.

Sorry I don't understand what you mean by "click in the heading to sort, click in the heading again to change ascending/descending". The columns can be re-arranged in order left to right using the Move Up/Move down buttons, but I can't find how to set the listing in date order or by a specified filetype.

Your view may vary, but somewhere near the top of the pane listing the files, you should see a row which I called the heading.  This row will have labels like

'Name'  'Size' 'Type' 'Date Modified' etc depending on what you've asked Thunar to display.

One of the categories in the heading row will have a little pointer up or down - say it is against 'Name'. This means your list is sorted by name and the pointer tells whether the sort is ascending or descending.  If you click in the header on 'Type' or 'Date Modified' the pointer will move and the list will be re-sorted by what you clicked.  If you click on the same again the pointer will change direction and the sort will reverse order. So sorting by date or file type is just a matter of clicking on what you want to sort by in the heading.
