firenice03, thanks for responding. Yes it would appear that PPAs that had historically not been causing problems, were now interfering . Temporarily isolated them and update was smooth. Then upgraded to 3.8 and updated again , still with PPAs unticked. Will look into why the PPAs are now taboo - online user forums etc.
