Get update errors nearly everytime I try to update

I am running LLOS from an external HDD.  When I started to experiment with Linux, it was recommended that I set up separate boot, home and root directories.  I used a plan similar to the basic recommendations of well experienced people of which I am not one of. 

It appears that gzip is not finding enough room to process the files being downloaded.  If it is trying to use my boot sector to do this, my question is why?

What do I need to do in order to fix this issue?
