I'm glad it helped. I had the same 'shadow' problem when using Plank dock in the past.
But I had to stop using Plank due to some screen burn issues around the icons.
Reverted back to a Xfce panel with launchers, as Artim mentioned.
Xfce panel is not as much fun as Plank dock but it does the job all the same.
