Hi Monkeyman.

I believe the default location for backgrounds is /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce/, of course you're free to put them anywhere you like.

Do I have to do something special to the pics first?  I just d/l'ed some from Scotts list I'd like to use.

You don't have to do anything to the pictures specifically but depending on the location they're copied, you may need admin rights. There's a post in the link above that covers this.
