I was trying to run etcher on my laptop with xubuntu installed and it just wouldn't start. Then tried running it on another pc with elementary os on it and kept getting an error saying the image was on the drive I was trying to install it on or something which it wasn't. Got it running on my laptop which I ended up installing mx linux on since i couldn't get this os to work 
and mx linux only started working after making the adjustments to my bios that firenice03 recommended to get linux lite working.
Finally got it working by downloading the UEFI version. Still not totally sure what the issue was but thanks for all the help!
