A bit off topic for the original discussion, but no doubt you are aware of the vast regional dialects to be found around the UK, some of which even I have difficulty in understanding. Your hostess may have responded 'Yes chuck', 'Yes duck', 'Yes melove' or any other number of expressions.
Similarly in France, I can usually make myself understood but invariably fail to understand the reply!
There is of course American English which can differ wildly from standard English, as any American dictionary or thesaurus will show.
